How to Avoid Failure in FX: How 'Money Management' and 'Surplus Funds' Change Your Relationship with Money
It's Kaerun here 🐸
When I was a beginner in FX, I only thought about 'winning' and didn't understand how to manage my relationship with money at all. As a result, I had many painful experiences. Looking back now, I deeply feel that what I should have learned before winning was 'the sense of distance from money'.
In FX, 'money management' is incredibly important, but I think it's not just about 'trying not to lose money' or 'cutting losses,' but also about properly re-evaluating the emotional distance between yourself and your money. In the past, I would get carried away after a small win and enter with an unreasonable lot size, or conversely, when I had a losing streak, I would become afraid of money and unable to trade... I was very much swayed by my emotions.
That's why I started to be conscious of trading with 'surplus funds.' Surplus funds are 'money that won't affect your life even if you lose it,' but once I started managing this separately, I felt much more at ease. When you have peace of mind, strangely enough, the way you see the charts changes too.
In addition to that, I also became very conscious of risk control. It's not difficult; it's just about setting rules for yourself, like 'I'll stop here for today' or 'I'll skip this trade,' and sticking to those rules carefully. I finally realized that this is a way to protect myself.
Ultimately, FX is a series of how you face money. I feel that it's not just money as numbers, but your 'inner view of money'—the value of money to you and the thoughts you have while trading—that directly shows up in your results.
So, if you are currently struggling and worried because things aren't going well in FX, please try to gently re-evaluate your 'relationship with money' first. If you face it at your own pace, without rushing and with kindness, I'm sure positive changes will come to your trading as well. It was the same for me, so you'll be fine.
