The mindset of those who win in FX when the market is volatile lies in risk management, flexible response, and mental maintenance

Since I quit my office job to become a full-time FX trader, I have experienced more restlessness when the market is volatile and turbulent than when it is calm. Especially during periods of intense price movement, it is easy to get carried away, thinking, 'If I enter here, I might make a killing.' However, I have realized that in such times, the most important thing is not to lose your composure.

I believe that those who win when the market is volatile first and foremost practice thorough risk management. While large price movements may look like great opportunities, losses can also balloon in an instant. At first, I would panic, thinking, 'If I don't move now, I'll be too late,' and I ended up suffering huge losses by entering trades with vague justifications. Since then, no matter how wildly the market is moving, I have started to think first about 'how much risk I can afford to take here.'

Another important thing is flexible response. Perhaps because I am a bit laid-back, my mind used to go blank when unexpected movements occurred. But in a volatile market, it is normal for things not to go as expected. I think that by deciding, 'If there is an unexpected movement, I will change my thinking immediately,' you create the leeway to handle unforeseen situations. The ability to respond flexibly feels like it lightens the heart even outside of trading.

Finally, and most importantly, is mental maintenance. Facing a volatile market for a long time leads to an accumulation of fatigue and impatience. I have also continued to open charts while my mind was in turmoil, thinking, 'I don't care anymore.' At such times, I make it a point to stand up, drink some tea, or do some light stretching. Being a girl who is a bit concerned about her figure (laughs), it has become a habit for me to make time to calm my mind without overdoing it.

If you are currently struggling because things aren't going well in a volatile market, please first take a look at whether your risk management is sufficient, whether you are flexibly changing your thinking, and whether your mind is tired.
