Choose a Side Hustle Based on Whether It Enriches Your Life, Not Just Whether It Makes Money | How to Choose a Side Hustle That Suits You
“I want to start a side hustle, but how should I choose one?”
Have you ever worried about that?
When you look at social media,
“This is how you make money!”
“I made X amount of money this month!”
There is so much information like that flowing around.
But precisely because there is too much information,
you end up not knowing what to choose, right?
I was the same when I first started thinking about side hustles.
So now,
I try to think based on one standard.
“Will this side hustle enrich my future?”
Ever since I started thinking about it in terms of my whole life,
rather than just revenue,
I have had less trouble choosing a side hustle.
In this article,
I will talk about the approach to choosing a side hustle that I value.
By the time you finish reading,
I hope you find at least one hint for choosing a side hustle that works for you.
Labor-based or Asset-based? Two Mechanisms of Side Hustles
There are broadly two ways of thinking about side hustles.
Flow-based
This is a method of earning income based on the time you work.
Part-time jobs, freelance contracts,
and one-off tasks fall into this category.
Because you earn income for the work you do,
the appeal is that the results are easy to understand.
Stock-based
Often, you don't earn revenue at first,
but it is a side hustle where you can expect continuous income in the future by building it up.
Blogs, note, and YouTube are typical examples.
Both have their merits.
So what is important is,
not “which one is correct,” but
“what kind of life do I want to lead?”Side hustles are a means to increase income, but
I believe they are also a choice that determines how you spend your time in life.
Why I choose stock-based even if there is no revenue
The reason I choose stock-based side hustles
was the result of thinking about my life's priorities.
At first,
I used to think, “Which side hustle makes the most money?”
But,
while continuing to invest and build assets,
I started to think, “What kind of life do I want to lead in the future?”
Flow-based work definitely brings in income if you work.
On the other hand, if you don't work, the income stops.
Stock-based work,
might have a difficult period at first.
There is no guarantee it will become profitable.
But if it takes shape,
there is a possibility that you can continue to deliver value even during the time you are not working.
My purpose for continuing to build assets
is not to become rich.
I want to increase the time I spend with my family and loved ones.
When I find something I want to do,
I want to lead a life where I can choose freely.
To achieve that,
I thought that cultivating a mechanism where assets and content work for me little by little is closer to my ideal than a mechanism where income stops if I don't constantly work.
Of course, it is not easy.
So even now,
I am building it up steadily, just like asset formation.
Think of side hustles with a long-term perspective, just like investing
Of course, I am not denying flow-based side hustles.
For example,
there are people who love interacting with others more than anything,
and for whom customer service itself is their life's fulfillment.
That means
that person has found a way of life that is true to themselves.
I want to support such people from the bottom of my heart.
On the other hand, I
feel a great sense of fulfillment in the time I spend conveying ways to enrich life,
meeting friends with whom I can grow while learning together,
and doing activities that can give a little push to people who are struggling.
That is why my current note is
an extension of that.
Of course, it is important for side hustles to increase immediate revenue.
But I think
“In the long time that is life, how do I want to be?”
I believe that choosing a side hustle by working backward from that
will result in it lasting longer and enriching your life.
Both investing and side hustles,
rather than just chasing short-term profits,
think of them as a means to get closer to your ideal future. That way, you won't be impatient,
and you can continue in your own way, can't you?
Summary
When choosing a side hustle,
many people use “what makes the most money” as their standard.
Of course, that is also an important perspective.
But I
“Does this side hustle bring me closer to the life I idealize?”
I value this standard more than anything else.
What I wanted to convey this time is
That flow-based and stock-based models each have their own merits
That I choose the stock-based model because I want to increase my free time in life
That thinking about side hustles with a long-term perspective, just like investing, is a shortcut to enriching your life
These are the three.
A side hustle is not just for increasing your income.
It is also a means to gradually give shape to the kind of life you want to lead.
If you are currently struggling to choose a side hustle,
try thinking from the perspective of "what kind of life do I want to lead" instead of "which one makes money."
Once you find that answer,
I believe your side hustle will surely become more enjoyable and something you can continue for a long time.
Thank you for reading until the end!
I hope this article serves as a catalyst for you to think about side hustles in a more positive light.
If you resonated even a little bit with the idea of,
"Let's think about what kind of life I want to lead through a side hustle,"
it would encourage me if you could give me a like, follow, or comment with your thoughts.
