Following up on my previous post, I am summarizing the knowledge I read in books about wood maintenance for my own reference.
About Urethane Wood Coatings
Urethane resin molecules undergo a chemical reaction to form a plastic film.
It is sometimes called resin finishing.
Pros
The coating is thick and protects the wood.
It is resistant to water, heat, and scratches, making it easy to handle.
Cons
The wood's moisture-regulating properties, texture, and feel are diminished.
The coating thins out with use, but it is difficult for an individual to reapply.
Water rings on urethane-coated tables
These occur if hot items are placed directly on the surface.
As a precaution...
◇ Use trivets or coasters and do not place items directly on the surface.
If a water ring has formed...
◇ Use a hair dryer, starting with a low setting and gradually warming the area.
◇ For older water rings, soak the affected area with oil for about an hour, wipe it off, and then buff it dry.
≪Oil: In addition to furniture maintenance oil, mayonnaise or olive oil can also be used≫
About Urushi (Lacquer) Coating
A traditional Japanese coating that uses sap from the lacquer tree.
Like urethane coating, it protects the wood with a thick layer.
While the wood's natural feel is diminished, it has a unique beauty characteristic of lacquer.
Pros
If the lacquer peels off after long-term use, it can be reapplied to ensure long-lasting use.
Caution
So-called "synthetic lacquerware," which uses synthetic resin paints instead of natural lacquer, requires different handling.
Glass Coating
Recently, it is often used for tableware and cutlery.
Liquid glass is soaked into the wood and undergoes a chemical reaction to turn into glass.
It penetrates the wood to strengthen it from the inside.
Pros
The texture, moisture-regulating function, and scent of the wood remain the same as if it were uncoated.
About tableware with urethane, lacquer, or glass coatings
Wash with neutral detergent and a soft sponge immediately after use.
Wipe off moisture and let it air dry in the shade.
Using them every day is also a form of maintenance!
General Precautions for Wooden Tableware
It is better to avoid very hot food
Do not leave it soaking in water
Do not use dishwashers (dryers), direct sunlight, or heating appliances
Store in a well-ventilated place
