[Movie Review] Yorgos Lanthimos' 'Bugonia' - Conspiracy Theories, Aliens, and a Modern 'Princess Kaguya' - ★★★★★

In these days when AI progress never stops, why not dive right in?

Hi, I'm Jun-chan. I live by the motto 'everything will work out somehow,' but the 'obsessions' of the characters in the movie I just watched were beyond the level of just working out.

As my profile says, I have 'limitless hobbies,' but when I was a child, I actually believed that I was someone left behind on Earth and that my real family would come from space to pick me up one day—I was what you'd call a 'space cadet.' My ADHD-leaning brain has always tended to fly off into worlds of fantasy and sci-fi.

The movie I went to see this time is director Yorgos Lanthimos' new film, 'Bugonia'.
It's not for everyone. But if you grew up with 'The X-Files' and internet conspiracy theories, it will definitely hit home.

[A Modern 'Princess Kaguya'? The Skill to Portray Distorted Ideas Straightforwardly]

As a Japanese person, I grew up with 'Princess Kaguya,' which could be called one of the oldest sci-fi stories. To me, 'Bugonia' felt like a work that replaced that myth with 'American-style conspiracy theory storytelling.' I had that hunch from an early stage, but the ending confirmed it.

If you've seen director Lanthimos' past works, you might feel this one has a relatively straightforward narrative style. However, the 'ideas' themselves are quite distorted. That's likely why he avoided confusing the audience with overly technical direction. It's a film with a very clever way of moving the story forward, one that trusts its viewers.

[Emma and Jesse's Masterful Performances, and the 'X-Files' Vibe]

At first glance, the story is a typical psychological suspense. However, Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons establish the structure of their conflict through 'acting' alone, rather than explanatory dialogue. They skillfully mislead the audience's understanding and pull the rug out from under us time and time again.

Jesse Plemons was especially superb!
He portrays an 'obsessive' character who, while feeling left behind by society, never doubts his own convictions. He is a true underdog, and even though he's treated as a weirdo by those around him, he genuinely believes in his own agenda. That persona strongly reminded me of the Lone Gunmen from 'The X-Files'.
He's often mocked, but he's strangely sincere and has a bizarre sense of ethics. Since I'm a person on 'that side' of things, I couldn't help but empathize, and I was grinning throughout the screening, laughing out loud several times.

[The Eyes Speak Volumes - Precise Cinematography and Composition]

Some might find this movie boring or slow-paced, but I don't think so at all. Above all, what captivated me was the 'cinematography'.

The lens selection to capture the actors' 'eyes' is particularly brilliant. Each close-up is meticulously calculated, not saying more than necessary through the eyes, yet making you feel that 'something is definitely lurking there.' Restrained editing and exquisite music are layered on top, drawing the audience in without ever being loud.
From the moment you start 'reading' what lies behind the characters' gazes, there is no such thing as a boring moment in this film.

Furthermore, the structure where each chapter is presented as a 'Flat Earth model' was also impressive. Every detail carefully placed in each scene has meaning and implication, making you want to watch it over and over to dig deeper. By now, the Reddit theory threads must be on fire.

[Summary: Prepare for Disclosure Day?]

It's quite ironic that Spielberg is releasing a movie about 'Disclosure Day' around the same time. Should we be preparing for something, or is it just a fantasy? We'll find out eventually.

I want to send my heartfelt applause to Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Yorgos Lanthimos, and the entire production team. They've done it brilliantly once again!

I recommend this to anyone who finds that kind of story compelling.
