Artists, Let's Make CDs!
With streaming so widespread now, are CDs really necessary? In the age of subscriptions, we live in a time where music from all over the world can be heard anytime, anywhere.
Given that, some might wonder, "What is the point of going out of your way to make a CD in this day and age?" But I believe that for an artist, a CD is a "business card," a "fan item," a "gift," and "branding" itself.
■ Business Card
Generally, a business card is a tool used to tell someone who you are in a short amount of time. A CD is the same for an artist. Through the jacket photo, it conveys your worldview, and through the work itself, it introduces you—sharing your tone, your expression, and your philosophy on music in ways that a profile or title alone cannot.
"Please, give it a listen."
A CD that you can hand over with those words is a presence that speaks for you more than any paper business card ever could.
■ Fan Item
Fans enjoy a performance from the moment they step into the venue. They receive a program note, look at the posters in the lobby, and peek into the merchandise area.
After the performance, they buy a CD and participate in an autograph session.
On the train ride home, they look back at the photos posted on social media by the organizer, gaze at their autographed CD, and reflect on the performance they just witnessed.
If you just want to listen to music, streaming might be enough.
However, that CD is etched with the emotions and memories felt on that day. That is why a CD is not just a source of audio, but a precious fan item that allows fans to recall that moment whenever they wish.
■ Gift
For teachers who have helped you, sponsors who support you, those who organized or hosted your concerts, and media personnel who have interviewed you.
A single CD handed over with the sentiment of "Thank you" holds value beyond words.
You are not just gifting music. You are gifting yourself at that point in time as a single work of art. I believe that is the charm of a CD.
■ Branding
A CD is not just a source of audio. The song selection, title, jacket photo, booklet design, liner notes, and paper quality—all of these express the worldview of "this is the kind of artist I am."
As a photographer, I have shot many CD jackets. What kind of music does this person play, what values do they hold, and what kind of future are they envisioning? I value ensuring that this worldview is conveyed through a single photograph.
I believe a brand is defined by how it is remembered. A CD leaves an impression on the listener's heart, incorporating not just music, but also photography, design, and words. I believe the CD is the most powerful branding tool for an artist.
Now that digital distribution has become the norm, hasn't the role of the CD shifted from being 'something to listen to music on' to 'a work of art that conveys who you are as an artist'?
And that single disc can create new encounters with others, nurture memories with fans, express gratitude to those who have supported you, and quietly continue to tell the story of your brand.
Not just to deliver your music, but to deliver yourself—artists, let's make CDs!
