[Deputy Manager's Diary] "Cargo is heavy machinery, too!" The full record of the miraculous collaboration event driven by fans' "delusions"

"What if our favorite heavy machinery and locomotives were lined up at a freight station...?"

A story that began with the "delusion" of a single fan moved corporations, crossed industry boundaries, and finally became a reality.
Saturday, May 9, 2026, at JR Freight Tsuchiura Station in Tsuchiura City, Ibaraki Prefecture, where Hitachi Construction Machinery's mother plant is located.
In a place where you can never usually enter,
an unprecedented collaboration event carrying the dreams of heavy machinery fans and freight/railway fans was held.

A special piece of heavy machinery that is the only one of its kind in Japan,
a one-of-a-kind original container,
and a massive locomotive affectionately known as "Kintaro."
Why did this miracle happen?

How did the passion born from a fan community become the power to realize a miraculous collaboration?
We record here the full story of that moving day, wrapped in excitement and smiles.

It all started with a fan's post

When I interview heavy machinery fans, a certain number of them say it.

"Actually, I like freight, too."

In our dialogues with over 200 heavy machinery fans so far,
we had noticed an interesting fact.

Among those fascinated by moving lumps of iron—heavy machinery—
there are quite a few people who also love the sight of lumps of iron speeding along rails,
especially "freight fans."

At the time, no one imagined that this small realization would eventually create a huge swell.

On our community site, "Heavy Machinery Fandom,"
there is a "Casual Comment" corner where people post about topics.

There, we asked this question:
"What kind of event would make railway fans fall in love with heavy machinery?"

While numerous ideas were submitted, one day, one post appeared.

"Display Hitachi Construction Machinery containers, a ZAXIS200, and a locomotive at a freight station"

A post from a fan to the community site "Heavy Machinery Fandom"

It was such a grand and exciting "dream story" that it captured the hearts of many fans.
However, this single comment was the signal that started the chain of miracles.

Until the dots connect into a line. "Locomotives are the heavy machinery of the railway world"

Miracles are always born from human connections.
Through the introduction of a certain heavy machinery fan, Station Master Utashiro of JR Freight Tsuchiura Station became a member of "Heavy Machinery Fandom."
The station master, who says he loves railways, freight, and aircraft, and
we hit it off immediately!

In that conversation, the words the station master uttered shattered our fixed ideas.

"Locomotives are the heavy machinery of the railway world, after all."

Honestly, it didn't click for me right away.

However, later on, a book posted to the community by a certain fan helped clarify the meaning of those words.

"Trains Are Not the Only Railway Vehicles: The Murmurs of a Diesel Car" by Tadashi Hara. Other fans left comments like this on the post.

"The engine and transmission are mechanically the same, after all. Even if the required characteristics are different from construction machinery, I think there are parts of the mechanism's design that can serve as a reference."

That was when I finally realized it. Unlike "electric trains" that carry passengers using the power of electricity we are all familiar with, the structure of diesel locomotives that haul heavy freight is extremely similar to construction machinery.

They generate power with an engine and transmit it through a transmission. They were, in fact, "heavy machinery" themselves.

Also, in February 2025, when I visited someone who is both a heavy machinery fan in Fukushima and a huge freight fan. He used a whiteboard, his eyes sparkling, and began to talk like a young boy. "Couldn't we do something like this at Tsuchiura Station?". It was the most fun "delusional planning meeting" ever.

The wall that stood in our way and the savior who rushed over in his "personal car"

One day, as the plan began to take concrete shape toward realizing the dream, we hit a major wall.

The heavy machinery that would be the star of the event. When I imagined it standing alongside giant forklifts and locomotives in the freight yard, there was only one answer. "It has to be a wheeled (tire-type) hydraulic excavator!"

That was when the ZX125W came to mind. It is the well-known wheeled hydraulic excavator from Hitachi Construction Machinery. As an aside, this ZX125W is a machine so coveted that some fans say they "dream of making it their personal car."

👇 The ZX125W is loved by fans like this.

However, when I conveyed that thought to Mr. Suzuki from the Hitachi Construction Machinery Tsukuba Sales Office, who was working hard to help hold the event, a shocking remark came back.

"We have crawler-type hydraulic excavators, but
we do not have any tire-type excavators available for rent."

I went blank at the unexpected words. The main star was missing.
We could not hide our agitation at a situation that shook the very foundation of the event.

Just when it seemed all options were exhausted, a ray of light shone through.

I decided to try my luck and contacted President Ishida of Ishida Co., Ltd. (https://www.ishida-power.co.jp/), who runs a construction company in Ryugasaki City and is himself an avid heavy machinery fan.

“It’s for May 9th, but would you be able to drive your ZX125W to Tsuchiura Station yourself?
I want to hold an event for heavy machinery fans and freight fans...”

Thinking back, it was an incredibly unreasonable and audacious request...
However, the reply from Mr. Ishida was far beyond our imagination.

“With pleasure!”

It was a super-fast response.

To our surprise, Mr. Ishida said he would drive his own beloved company machine, the ZX125W-7, all the way to Tsuchiura Station just for this event!

Behind the realization of this event lay the deep-as-the-ocean love and
full cooperation of one heavy machinery fan.

The day dreams became reality. May 9, 2026, the miracle at Tsuchiura Station

And so, the day that those "delusions" became reality arrived.
May 9, 2026, at the JR Freight Tsuchiura Station under a perfectly clear sky.

After a long time since the initial concept, the dream event was finally realized.

The event title was“Freight is heavy machinery, too!”.

The cover of the event "bookmark" distributed on the day

24 members of the heavy machinery fandom gathered in Tsuchiura, the sacred ground where Hitachi Construction Machinery's mother factory is located.

The vast freight station premises, which are usually strictly off-limits.
What spread out before us was a dreamlike sight that no one had ever seen before.

The stars were an incredibly luxurious "one-of-a-kind combo."

One was the wheel-type hydraulic excavator that Hitachi Construction Machinery is proud of“ZX125W-7”.
Moreover, it is the only super-rare machine in Japan with“rear outrigger specifications”, and it is equipped with a TAGUCHI full-rotation Grasper!

The other was
the "orange container (U20A-581)" that supports the transport of Hitachi Construction Machinery's production parts.
This, too, is an original design that exists only once in Japan.

Appearing there with a ground-shaking rumble was the
JR Freight's EH500 electric locomotive, commonly known as "Kintaro."
Its massive 134-ton body is comparable to the Hitachi Construction Machinery EX1200 class ultra-large hydraulic excavator.
It is truly "heavy machinery on the tracks."

Some fans brought their own handmade headmarks, while others brought plush toys to take photos with, and the venue was filled with smiles as everyone spent their time in their own way.

During the photo session where heavy machinery and locomotives stood side-by-side, everyone was busy snapping pictures.

The event was also packed with hands-on activities.
We watched a demonstration of the ZX125W-7 skillfully operating its arm, and nearby, we observed the powerful cargo handling work performed by a 10-ton forklift.

And then, an attraction where you could go inside a container!
Cheers of "It's really pitch black!" went up, and we were able to experience the logistics site firsthand.

From locomotive coupling operations to the raising and lowering of the pantograph, we were able to see scenes that railway fans drool over up close, and all the participants were all smiles!

The group photos, of which I don't even know how many we took, spoke volumes about the happiness of that day.

Voices of enthusiasm and excitement! From participant surveys

In the survey we asked participants to fill out after the event,
everyone gave it a perfect 5-star rating for satisfaction, and comments filled with emotion and excitement were sent in one after another.

"Heavy machinery and railways!! Was an event like this held for me, a train and heavy machinery fan!? You really did it!! As expected of the heavy machinery fandom. For the first time in a while, I truly enjoyed myself from the bottom of my heart."

"A fusion of heavy machinery and JR Freight. It's a combination you wouldn't easily think of, but for me, having a husband who is a train geek, it was an event we could enjoy as a couple. Just watching how everyone moved was fun. I was once again convinced of the happiness of having things you love."

In particular, many people mentioned that the free exploration of areas usually off-limits and the interaction with the staff left a lasting impression.

"Above all, being allowed to walk around the premises so freely. Furthermore, everyone was very polite. Being able to talk to the locomotive driver. I would like to thank the station master and everyone involved."

"Thank you for holding this on the premises during operation, which is rare for general railway events. I was moved to be able to watch the EH500 depart from the ground rather than from a passenger platform (the blower, VVVF, and motor sounds were the best)."

And, words of gratitude to Mr. Ishida, the key person behind this event.

"Thank you for showing us your wonderful vehicle. It was kept so clean, and the logo was sparkling, which really caught my eye."
"President Ishida's kindness showed in his smile, and it made me feel happy. President Ishida! Thank you so, so much."

Fans' "passion" leads to empathy for social issues

This event was not just a fan festival.
The depth of its significance is conveyed through the participants' comments.

"It's 'Freight is heavy machinery, too.' I learned so much from everyone and was able to study. There were many new discoveries."

"I realized the sustainability of freight trains. I felt that it is wonderful to cooperate across industry boundaries."

One of the main attractions, the "Orange Container," is a symbol of the"modal shift"that Hitachi Construction Machinery is promoting to reduce GHG emissions.
One of the goals of this event is to deepen understanding of this important initiative through fan experiences.

"I felt that a transport infrastructure capable of stably delivering large quantities of goods on a national scale is unique to railway freight. I feel that the role of JR Freight will become even more important in the future."
"It was my first time inside a container. It was fun to hear directly from the staff about things I didn't know before, such as how they are used to transport vegetables that require ventilation."

The pure enthusiasm of "liking" something encourages people to take ownership of social issues like logistics and the environment, spreading empathy for a sustainable society.

By joining hands, the fan community and the company
created a moment where unprecedented new value was born.

With gratitude. And, on to the next dream

This miraculous day could not have been realized without the cooperation of so many people.
Station Master Utashiro and all the staff at JR Freight Tsuchiura Station who provided full cooperation.
President Ishida of Ishida Co., Ltd., who rushed over from Ryugasaki with the ZX125W-7.
And my colleagues from the Hitachi Construction Machinery Japan Tsukuba Sales Office, Procurement Department, and Design Department.
Above all, the Heavy Machinery Fandom, who were the origin of this project and participated with the best smiles.
Thank you, truly, so much.

"I want to do it again!"
After the event, many people said that to us.
The story that began with a fan's dream has come to fruition in the best possible way.

However, this is not the end.
Surely, a new journey of dreams will begin from here once again.
