[ASMR] The roar of the Shinkansen and the chirping of birds. Recording the "Breath of Tokyo" under the elevated tracks at Kanda Station, Tokyo. [Revised v2]

"Open your ears wide."
This is my motto for field recording. We usually let the hustle and bustle of the city wash over us as "noise," but if you listen consciously, there is a unique orchestra played by the city itself.
This time, I have archived the soundscape around "Kanda Station," which can be called an artery of Tokyo.

The atmosphere on-site: The resonance of iron and fragments of daily life

The area under the elevated tracks at Kanda Station is a very fascinating recording spot for me.
The heavy metallic sound of the Shinkansen running overhead. The hustle and bustle of the city echoing in response. Yet, in the gaps between them, the chirping of birds living in the city sometimes drifts in.
I feel that this layer of "massive artificial sound" and "modest sounds of life" is the true atmosphere of modern Tokyo.

🎧 Listening Advice
To reproduce the spaciousness of the environment, please use headphones or earphones.

Highlight: 1 minute 17 seconds, "The roar of the Shinkansen: Resonance under the elevated tracks"

In this recording, I would like you to pay special attention to thesound of the Shinkansen passing by, starting around 1 minute 17 secondsinto the track.
The power of the low-end frequencies that crush the air is something you can only get in the enclosed space under the elevated tracks. And the slight silence and lingering echoes of the city that remain after it passes. I have carefully packaged this contrast as a spatial recording.

Behind the scenes: About the equipment used

For this recording, I chose the following setup, considering the balance between mobility and sound quality.

  • Recorder: ZOOM M4(Overwhelming dynamic range with 32-bit float)

  • Microphone: SONY ECM-MS2

This setting allows me to pick up delicate ambient sounds without worrying about clipping, even with the sudden loud volume of the Shinkansen. I have adjusted it with the intention of capturing even the "damp air" of the location.

Conclusion: A world connected by sound

In the "Japan Ambient World" project, I continue to record these sounds hidden in the daily life of Japan.
Whether you listen to the sounds of Kanda Station while immersing yourself in work, or to recall the scenery of Tokyo you once visited, I hope these sounds add a new color to your daily life.
Which city's sounds should I deliver next?
My sound adventure continues.

Please check out the other series of works as well.
