🌾“Tenjin Rice” from Tokyo — On an Auspicious Day, Young People Sowed Seeds with Their Wishes
✍️Introduction
Did you know that rice is grown in Tokyo?
Not just anywhere — but in carefully preserved fields,
supported by people who continue to protect local agriculture.
On this special day, known in Japan as an “Ichiryū Manbaibi”
(an auspicious day when one small action is believed to grow into great success),
I joined a rice planting activity at Nishino Farm.
Gathered there were young food professionals, teachers, and farmers —
people connected by one shared purpose:
To grow, protect, and pass on food culture.

🌱The Experience
Under a clear blue sky,
we worked together in the fields.
Some were touching soil for the first time.
Others guided us with experienced hands.
But once we stepped into the field,
titles and backgrounds no longer mattered.
There was a quiet connection —
a shared understanding that food begins here.
🌾When Rice Varieties Change
One of the most memorable things I learned that day
was about the change in rice varieties.
Due to increasingly hot summers,
the farm has shifted from Kinu-hikari to a more heat-resistant variety.
Rice is not something fixed or unchanging.
It evolves with climate, environment, and human decisions.
This realization made me see rice —
not just as food, but as a living story.
🍽️A Memorable Lunch
After working in the field,
we shared a meal together.
And it was simply… unforgettable.
Freshly cooked rice,
each grain firm and naturally sweet.
But what made it truly special was this:
We had just participated in the process of growing it.
That connection transformed a simple meal
into something deeply meaningful.

🤝 A Community Supporting Rice
This experience was made possible by a volunteer-based group
called the “Tokyo Rice Salon.”
Even without profit or obligation,
people come together every year to protect and celebrate rice culture.
I feel grateful to be part of this circle —
not just as a participant,
but as someone who shares its story.
🌾Conclusion
There is always a reason why something tastes good.
Behind every meal,
there are people, time, and intention.
And sometimes,
you need to step into the field to truly understand it.
✨Final Thoughts
I hope to continue visiting places like this,
connecting with people,
and sharing these stories with others.
And of course—
if there’s delicious food involved, I’ll be there.
