The Day My Husband Was 40% Off—A Story of an Unforgettable Funny Memory
A small, round sticker was lying on the edge of the carpet.
I don't know how long it had been there.
When I opened a bag of groceries I had bought,
perhaps the packaging rubbed against it, causing it to peel off and fall right there.
A black double circle on a white background.
I felt like I had seen it somewhere before, but I just couldn't remember.
Busy with household chores,
I immediately pushed that small presence out of my mind.
A few days later, the sticker disappeared somewhere, and I had completely forgotten about it.
One weekend afternoon.
My husband, who had been relaxing on the carpet, walked over with a strangely slow gait while scratching his back.
I suddenly felt something was off and looked at him.
"Huh?"
Stuck to his back was that familiar round object.
"Hey, that sticker..."
"Hmm? What's this?"
"I knew I'd seen it somewhere before."
Even after peeling it off, we still didn't know what it was.
Curious, I looked it up and found out
that it was a discount management sticker used in supermarket backrooms.
I showed my husband that round sticker.
"Honey, you were 40% off."
When I said that, my husband froze for a moment, then burst into laughter.
Of course, I didn't buy my husband at a discounted price.
I never imagined that a sticker which had been on food a few days ago would, after several days,
end up stuck to my husband's back.
In our house, odd, mismatched 'lost items' like this sometimes find their way in.
Months had passed since the sticker incident, and the season had shifted to autumn.
And then, during that year's Beaujolais season, another
not 'lost item' but 'mix-up' found its way into our home.
Buying just one bottle of Beaujolais Nouveau every year was my small pleasure.
That year, my favorite supermarket was running a promotion where
you could get a discount if you bought a Beaujolais along with another bottle of wine.
Without thinking too much about it, I bought a set consisting of a Beaujolais and a bottle recommended by the shop,
and left them in a cool room.
A few days passed.
When the night air began to carry a sharp chill, my husband said,
“Shall we open the Beaujolais soon?”
I headed to the other room.
The room was dark.
But thinking it wasn't worth the trouble of turning on the light,
I reached out and grabbed the black bottle in the front.
Relying only on the coldness of the glass, I returned to the dining room.
“Here you go.”
I handed the bottle to my husband.
My husband has a strange habit of
always shaking the bottle before opening red wine.
Whether it's sake, dressing, or sauce,
he shakes everything vigorously.
In his mind, it seems that liquids should be homogenized before being tasted.
That night, too, he shook the bottle up and down
with his usual affection.
Then, he inserted the screw, paused for a moment,
and popped the cork.
—That was the moment.
As if a fire extinguisher had been fired, the liquid sprayed out with great force.
“WHOOSH!!!”
A pillar of white foam soared over my husband's face and reached the ceiling light.
“WHOA!!!”
My husband leaned back sharply, shouting and flailing his arms.
That was when my memories suddenly clicked into place.
That's right.
I had bought champagne along with the Beaujolais...
In the dark room, I had unconsciously grabbed the bottle in front.
Far from being angry, my husband,
while soaking wet,
"Why did this happen? (laughs)"
he said with a big laugh before going to change his T-shirt.
I explained the situation and apologized sincerely.
"So that's what happened.
You startled me when it suddenly sprayed out (laughs)."
The two of us, with wry smiles, wiped the floor,
wiped the table,
and I took responsibility for the ceiling light by standing on a chair and stretching to wipe it.
We toasted with the little bit of champagne left in the bottle,
and this time, we opened the real Beaujolais.
Because of all that,
our home has gained another "signature scene" that only the two of us know about.
The 40% off sticker stuck to his back.
The champagne fountain that reached the ceiling.
Memories sometimes grow in ways that cannot be written on a schedule.
Making a mistake while shopping,
grabbing the wrong bottle in the dark,
or for some reason, having a discount sticker stuck to my husband's back.
Such unexpected little bloopers
later become irreplaceable, funny stories just for the two of us.
Perhaps that is what daily life is actually like.
We don't need to go to special places.
We don't need to accomplish anything grand.
We just laugh together at the funny things that roll into the gaps of our daily lives.
And when a few years have passed,
"I'm really sorry about that time. But that was a little funny, wasn't it?"
"Well, it wasn't exactly funny (wry smile),"
we say as we remember it together.
That is how our time together gradually overlaps.
Even with just a discount sticker.
Even with just a bottle of champagne.
Memories are sometimes updated in unexpected moments.
And for some reason, in our house,
that memory always has a discount sticker with a slightly torn edge stuck to it.
