Rice at Western-style Restaurants
I don't really like the rice served at Western-style restaurants. Because of this, I basically never go into a Western-style restaurant for the first time.
It's not that the rice itself is bad. I just hate that it's served on a flat plate. Rice served on a flat plate has a large surface area exposed to the air, so it cools down quickly. And since the sticky, short-grain rice that Japanese people love sticks firmly to the plate when it cools, I feel embarrassed looking at the plate after I've finished because there are so many grains of rice left that I couldn't pick up. (Curry rice is a bit better since the curry covers it.)
From this experience, I feel like I understood the reason why Japanese people serve rice in a bowl. By narrowing the surface area exposed to the air, they are likely keeping the rice warm for as long as possible. I think it is the best way to enjoy short-grain rice.
I think serving rice on a flat plate is an influence from the West, but since Japanese food is so well-accepted around the world, couldn't we promote a culture where even with Western food, short-grain rice is served in a bowl instead of on a flat plate?
