Living with Nature #25 | Horsetail sprouts again and again.
"No matter how many times I fall, I can't get back up again."
……Is that really true?
Hello.
I am here to help you gently untie the knots in your heart,
and return to your true self,
I'm Yukiyo-chan🌿
When June arrives,
in fields and gardens here and there,
there is a plant that vigorously shows its face.
That is,
horsetail.
If you are someone who gardens,
you have surely thought this at least once.
"It's growing again!"
Even if you pull it out,
even if you mow it down,
before you know it, it's growing healthily again.
Its vitality is enough to make you laugh.
When I was a child, it was just a weed.
But now, I see it differently.
In the field at my parents' house, too,
lots of horsetail grew every year.
When I was a child,
I thought it was just a weed.
It would grow back no matter how many times I pulled it,
a bit of a troublesome plant.
That was about the extent of my impression.
But it's different now.
When spring turns to early summer,
"Nice to see you again this year."
With that feeling,
I pick them one by one.
It's strange how,
even though it's the same plant,
it looks completely different when you change how you see it.
"Are you going to sell that kind of weed?"
When I first started picking horsetail,
my family laughed at me.
"Are you going to sell that kind of weed?"
They were certainly right.
In the field,
it is something to be pulled out.
A plant I would prefer to have less of.
But lately,
seeing me happily picking them,
people have started to laugh and say,
"It's like finding money on the street."
It grows on its own,
needs no fertilizer,
and requires no watering.
A plant like that,
becomes tea,
and nestles into someone's daily life.
That fact,
makes me feel happy somehow.
When I tried drinking it, it had a gentle taste.
When people hear the word horsetail,
many might have an image of it being bitter.
But in reality,
it has a very gentle taste.
The aroma is mild,
with a flavor somewhat reminiscent of green tea.
It is not flashy.
But,
it is the kind of cup,
that you want to drink every day.
It has long been used as a medicinal herb,
and is also known for containing minerals and silicon (silica).
Rather than seeking its medicinal benefits,
I enjoy it,
with the feeling of receiving a seasonal blessing.

A gift from spring to early summer
I,
love the wild grasses I encounter each season.
Mugwort in spring.
Horsetail in early summer.
Loquat leaves and persimmon leaves,
are also blessings of this season.
Just as we enjoy seasonal vegetables,
Eating seasonal wild plants.
Since I started living like this,
I have come to feel the seasons closer than before.
Nature,
I feel,
gently delivers what is needed for this season, right now.
Sprouting again even after being pulled out
The thing I like most about horsetail is
its vitality.
No matter how many times it is pulled,
no matter how many times it is mowed,
it sprouts again.
Even if it cannot be seen above ground,
under the soil,
it has firmly taken root.
When I look at that form,
I always think,
perhaps people,
are the same.
Even when things do not go well.
Even if there are days when you feel down.
Even if there are times when you get hurt.
Within us, too,
the strength to rise again,
still remains.
Even if you cannot see it right away,
deep within your heart,
it may be quietly continuing to take root.
"I can't get back up anymore."
...Is that really true?
In life,
there are events that make us feel like our hearts will break time and again.
But,
each time that happens,
we have managed to stand back up, little by little.
Just like horsetails,
sprouting again and again.
You don't have to be strong.
You don't have to recover quickly.
Deep in the soil,
It is okay to take a little break.
When the season comes around again,
you will surely be able to sprout.
Nature,
I feel like it is teaching us that.
Today's small exercise
Recently,
have you ever thought,
"Maybe I can't do this anymore."
At times like that,
please take a moment to look at the grass
growing at your feet.
Out of sight,
it continues to put down roots today as well.
And,
please ask yourself,
"Is that really true?"
Conclusion
When I was a child,
I thought horsetails were just weeds.
By now,
they have become plants that tell me the seasons.
And,
for me,
they are also teachers that show me the strength to stand up again and again.
Nature,
is living quietly today as well.
Without rushing,
without comparing.
Watching that form,
I also,
feel that it is okay to walk at my own pace.
That is how I feel.
Today, too,
I deliver just one question to you.
“Is that really so?”
Within you, too,
a strength like that of the horsetail,
is surely sleeping.🌿
🌿 If you would like, I will also share the scent of nature with you
Starting with the horsetail tea introduced in this article,
plants grown in the nature of Hoshino Village, Yame,
are harvested according to the season,
and dried at low temperatures while preserving their fragrance.
Along with the blessings of nature,
I hope to deliver a moment for you to take a relaxing break.
