Tsurumine Hachimangu Shrine: A Connection to the Minamoto Clan | A Healing Journey Through Shonan Chigasaki's Power Spots
Today, I would like to introduce Tsurumine Hachimangu Shrine, a shrine with a very deep history located in Chigasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture.
When you think of Shonan, you might imagine the sea, but this land is actually home to a historic shrine associated with the Minamoto clan.
The air within the shrine grounds is clear, creating a healing space that makes your heart feel lighter.
In this post, I will be introducing Tsurumine Hachimangu Shrine.
🏛️ [History and Origins]
The origins of this shrine date back to the middle of the Heian period—the year 1030 AD (the 3rd year of the Chogen era).
At that time, a warlord named Minamoto no Yoriyoshi came to the eastern provinces to suppress a rebellion that had broken out in the Kanto region.
Tsurumine Hachimangu was founded when he invited a deity from Iwashimizu Hachimangu in Kyoto to this land to pray for victory in battle.
Later, Yoriyoshi's son, Minamoto no Yoshiie—also known as Hachiman Taro Yoshiie—improved the shrine buildings to honor the deity even more, and it came to be called the "Main Hachimangu Shrine."
This shrine is, in a sense, a symbolic presence of the Minamoto clan's expansion into the eastern provinces. It is a valuable historical spot where you can feel the foundations of samurai culture.
⛩️ [Deities and Beliefs]
There are three deities enshrined at Tsurumine Hachimangu.
First, there is Hachiman-sama, or
▶️ Emperor Ojin
Next, Emperor Ojin's son,
▶️ Emperor Nintoku
And finally, the local guardian deity,
▶️ Sazuka no Okami
Furthermore, there is a place in one corner of the shrine grounds called "Tsurumine Tenmangu," where
▶️ Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning is also enshrined.
In other words, it is a very blessed shrine where you can receive blessings for success in competition, warding off evil, prosperity of descendants, and even academic achievement!

When you pass through the shrine's torii gate, you are greeted by a straight approach lined with pine trees.
These pines were planted during the Edo period to commemorate the donation of land by Tokugawa Iemitsu, and they have been designated as cultural assets by Chigasaki City.
As you proceed through the grounds, what catches your eye most is the great ginkgo tree said to be 1,000 years old.
This tree is said to have been planted by Minamoto no Yoshiie himself, and it is a "living sacred tree" that has watched over people for a long time.
In autumn, the golden leaves dye the grounds, and its beauty is truly divine.
There are also several small auxiliary shrines, and as you visit each one, you will feel your heart naturally settle.

🧭 [Access and Visiting Information]
The location is Hamanogo, Chigasaki City.
Take a bus from JR Chigasaki Station, get off at "Tsurumine Shogakko-mae," and it is about a 3-minute walk from there.
The shrine office is open from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM on weekdays, and until 4:00 PM on weekends and holidays.

The approach to Tsurumine Hachimangu Shrine is very long.
There is a torii gate here, but the main torii gate is located on National Route 1.

On the left is the Amateru Sumeru Omikami Shrine.
A shrine with a wonderful atmosphere.
There is also a shrine on the opposite side.
Futoshima Benzaiten Shrine.
Beyond that, walking along the approach, the shrine grounds are across the road.
The purification fountain.
A large ginkgo tree.
It is breathtaking.
I offer my prayers at the worship hall.
There is a shrine on the left.
Awashima Shrine.
It is a shrine dedicated to healing from illness.
Many people visit to offer their prayers.
I head toward the back.
A place where Zashiki-warashi play.
It is said that a Zashiki-warashi resides in this shrine.
Beyond the Zashiki-warashi, there is another shrine.
Hokomiya Shrine.
Next to it is the sacred tree.
The breath of life.
Next to that is Tsurumine Inari Shrine.
I love Inari shrines.
They look strong.
They stand sharp and alert.
I feel like I might be told, "Don't judge by appearances!!"
This is also a sacred tree.
By the way, the color of the Shinto priest's hakama is "purple."
This means they are at the highest rank.
I wonder how many years of service it takes to reach the rank of wearing a purple hakama...
