Drawn to an Unnamable Presence: Aalto's Vase and the Philosophy of Dampness
This vase is known as the "shape of a lake."
Perhaps that description gives it a sense of meaning for many people.
However, what I was drawn to was something that exists "before" such interpretations.
The wooden mold, the heat, and the artisan's breath.
The outline created in that single moment.
An unnamable presence that is vague, damp, and seems to slip through your fingers when you try to touch it.
Precisely because it cannot be explained, I wanted to preserve it.
This milky white curve gives weight to a space.
It has the strength of a still life that stands on its own, even without flowers.
Things chosen not for a reason, but for their presence,
will quietly transcend time in someone's life someday.
I believe that is something that remains, surely, as if bleeding through the dampness.
