Self-Love × Relationships 9: Knowing Your Emotions Means Knowing the Direction You Should Take

Knowing your emotions also means knowing the direction you should take from here on.
Emotions are the compass of life.

If your heart says "I don't like this," that is a sign that it is not the path you should take.
If your heart whispers "comfortable" or "at ease," that is the path that suits you.

As this compass becomes clearer, as I wrote in the previous article,
you will be able to choose for yourself who you continue to interact with.

This is not just about "putting up with things because they are a kind person."

Even in situations where the other person cannot understand your boundaries, unilaterally imposes their own values or pace on you, or brushes aside your NO—prioritizing your own emotions is essential to protecting yourself and your life.

The first step toward that is "knowing your emotions."

Changes that occur when you prioritize your emotions

If you continue to treat your own emotions as a compass, even if you look calm on the outside, changes will definitely progress on the inside.

Your limits and discomfort points become clear
→ "This far is OK" and "This is impossible" become clearly verbalized.

You can understand the "strangeness" of the other person's words and actions through your senses
→ Instead of thinking "that's strange" in your head, you know "this is wrong" at a physical level.

You become able to say NO or distance yourself
→ Because you stop ignoring the signs your emotions are giving you.

Only people who can respect your boundaries will naturally remain
→ It becomes easier to drift away from people who impose on you or use you because the relationship becomes strained.

Your confidence is restored, and your choices become unwavering
→ The focus shifts from "fitting in with others" to "choosing for yourself."

As a result, relationship troubles themselves decrease
→ Because you can catch discomfort at an early stage, you can avoid deep trouble.

In other words, when you start living with your emotions as your axis, "the relationships around you will change into a healthy form for you."that is what it means.

Simple exercises to prioritize your emotions

To cultivate the habit of prioritizing your emotions, start bylooking back on your day's experiences and catching the signs of your emotions. No special tools are needed; paper and a pen are enough.

1. Write down one line each for "things you didn't like / things that were comfortable" from that day.
Things you didn't like: XX
・Things that were comfortable: XX
A few words are enough. If you continue this for a few days, patterns in your emotions will naturally emerge.
It is also important to observe positive signs (things that were comfortable).
→ Because it will become clear what situations and people make you feel comfortable.

2. For each situation you wrote down, ask yourself, "What do I really want to do now?"
It's OK if you don't have an answer. By continuing to hold the question, your emotional compass will grow.
→ If you ask the same question about things that were comfortable, the direction you feel comfortable in will become even clearer.

Concrete example:
・Things you didn't like: "My boss pushed sudden work on me"
→ What do I really want to do? → "Refuse when it's impossible / discuss the order of handling tasks"
・Things that were comfortable: "Spent time laughing with a friend at a cafe"
→ What do I really want to do? → "I want to increase these kinds of reassuring times"

3. Note your physical reactions for each situation you wrote down.
Chest feels restless / breathing is shallow / voice becomes quiet
・Feeling relieved / tension releases
The body gives signs before emotions do. This is especially noticeable when interacting with someone who crosses your boundaries.

4. Accumulate "small YESes."
For the things you dislikedthat you wrote down in step 1, take small actions to protect yourself. Or, it is also okay to make a plan for how you want to act in the future. No special action is needed for things that felt comfortable.

Examples:
・After getting home, rest for just 5 minutes first.
・Delay replying to someone you feel heavy-hearted about by just 10 minutes.
・Distance yourself from someone who raises their voice.

By accumulating these "small YESes," you can experience the feeling of valuing yourself in your daily life.

Points
・Step 2 is the "awareness stage"
・Step 4 is the "action stage"
Being conscious of this order will naturally foster a habit of prioritizing your emotions.

By continuing this exercise, making choices based on your emotions will become natural, and the quality of your relationships will quietly but surely improve.

Summary

By being conscious of your emotions and accumulating small actions to protect yourself, your internal compass will clearly develop.
As a result, you will gain the power to choose relationships that do not strain you, and relationships where you feel safe will naturally remain.
Today's small step is the first step toward changing your relationships tomorrow.
