Lorelei: How a Movie Illuminated My Life
Back then, I would seriously say, "Lorelei System, activate!" while in the car (laughs).
There have been times when a movie has supported my life.
"Movies are just entertainment, right?"
I used to think that way, too.
But sometimes, a single movie can change the way you live your life from that point on.
For me, that movie was "Lorelei."
On days when I felt like giving up while caregiving.
On days when I had no money and couldn't see a future.
On nights when I felt all alone due to family problems.
Strangely, I found myself watching this movie over and over.
Of course, the tense battle scenes between submarines are powerful.
But that wasn't what drew me in.
What moved my heart were the people.
People who have something they want to protect.
People who try to move forward even while feeling lost.
People who risk their lives for someone else.
It is precisely because they are in extreme conditions that we see people's true selves.
Every time I watch this movie,
"True strength is the resolve to protect someone."
I feel like I am being taught that lesson.
That singing voice I still can't forget
There is a scene in the movie that still remains in my heart.
It is Paula singing "Mozart's Lullaby."
The moment I heard it for the first time, I felt as if time had stopped.
A beautiful and gentle singing voice echoing amidst the sorrow of war.
After hearing that song, I bought a CD of Hayley singing "Mozart's Lullaby."
From then on, I would play it every time I got in the car and sing along.
Even now, when I hear that melody, the world of "Lorelei" comes back to life vividly.
Thinking back on it, I must have been quite a strange person (laughs).
Back when I was obsessed with "Lorelei."
While driving the car, I would suddenly...
"Lorelei system, activate..."
I would say that seriously to myself (laughs).
Of course, nothing happens.
The car just keeps driving (laughs).
But for that moment, I was a crew member of the I-507.
I had stepped into the world of the movie.
Thinking about it now, it's a little embarrassing.
But being able to encounter a movie that I could get that absorbed in is still a happy memory for me.
The reason I am drawn to submarine movies
I have liked submarine movies for a long time.
"The Hunt for Red October"
And "Lorelei."
The ocean is quiet.
The conversations exchanged within that silence.
The tense atmosphere.
A single decision that determines the fate of many lives.
Not through flashy effects, but
stillness within motion...
It depicts people's resolve and convictions.
I think that is why I am drawn to it.
Movies are something you watch with your heart
When 'Lorelei' was released, it received mixed reviews.
Some people talked about the differences from the original novel, while others highly praised the visuals and the world-building.
However, when I watch a movie, I don't try to look for a 'correct' answer.
'What did this movie leave behind in my heart?'
I believe that is the most important thing.
Movies are not something you watch with your intellect, but with your heart.
That is what I believe.
'Lorelei' is a movie that still illuminates my life even now
In my life, there have been many times when I thought, 'I can't go on anymore.'
Days when I felt like my heart would break while caregiving.
Days with no money and no future in sight.
Nights when I suffered from family problems and wondered if I would be alone for the rest of my life.
At such times, movies were not just a way to forget reality.
After watching them,
"I'll try a little harder!"
They were a presence that made me think that way.
"Lorelei" is one of those films.
There are people who try to protect others.
Even in the midst of despair, there are people who do not give up hope.
Perhaps that is why I find myself watching this movie over and over again.
And even now, when I hear "Mozart's Lullaby," I am reminded of those days.
While driving my car,
"Lorelei System, activate!"
I actually used to say things like that (laughs).
Thinking about it now, it's a pretty embarrassing memory.
But encountering a work that I could be that passionate about is a treasure in my life.
Movies can change your life.
It doesn't mean reality changes immediately.
But your heart changes a little.
That "little bit" becomes the first step toward changing your life.
If you are lost in life right now.
If you are suffering from caregiving or family problems right now.
If you feel like you might not make it right now.
Please try watching 'Lorelei' just once.
A quiet light of hope might just ignite in your heart as well.
I will continue to watch this movie whenever I feel lost in life.
And while listening to that 'Mozart's Lullaby,' I will compose myself and take another step forward.
'Lorelei' is an important film that will continue to sail quietly within my heart.
