Thus, the attack on the Chinzei Tandai ended in failure, and conversely, the Kikuchi clan found itself on the verge of destruction.
After Kikuchi Takeshige's rout, the Kikuchi clan's home castle, Kuraoka Castle (Gokase Town, Miyazaki Prefecture), was attacked by Kiku Takamasa (?-1334) of the Chinzei Tandai side, and Takeshige barely escaped with his life. Incidentally, the Kiku family was a branch of the Hojo clan that governed territory in Kiku District, Buzen Province (Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture).
In this way, the Chinzei Tandai had completely suppressed the rebellion and seemed to have secured a solid position, but then, on May 9, 1333 (Genko 3/Shokei 2), news arrived that the Rokuhara Tandai had fallen.
With this news, the war situation in Kyushu would be reversed in one stroke.
Upon receiving the news of the fall of the Rokuhara Tandai, Shoni Sadatsune completely regretted his actions, saying,
"I should not have sided with the shogunate."
He was full of regret.
Shoni decided to change course even now, and sent messengers to the Otomo and Kikuchi clans saying,
"Let us hurry and destroy the Chinzei Tandai now."
It was a truly brazen proposal.
Kikuchi Takeshige was naturally angry and would not listen, saying, "Even though you betrayed and killed my father, not even three months have passed," but the Otomo side was keen. I think it was an incredibly shameless story.
Akahashi Tokitoki of the Chinzei Tandai learned of the Shoni's plot and decided to send his retainer, Nagaoka Rokuro (?-1333), to investigate. When Nagaoka visited the Shoni house, it was clear that they were preparing for a military campaign.
Nagaoka, who met with Shoni Sadatsune's son, Yorihisa (1294-1372), drew his sword and lunged at him, saying, "So, this is a plan for rebellion," but he was killed.
Having killed the messenger, the Shoni's plan was exposed, and they were forced to rush their uprising.
On May 25, Shoni Sadatsune and Otomo Sadamune attacked the Chinzei Tandai. With this second attack, the Chinzei Tandai was destroyed, and Akahashi Tokitoki was driven to commit suicide.
