The Story of the Japanese 00806 [Late Kamakura Period] The Rebellion of Kikuchi, Shoni, and Otomo
Now, on May 9, 1333 (Genko 3/Shokei 2), the Rokuhara Tandai fell at Banba, and on May 22, the Kamakura Shogunate fell at Tosho-ji Temple.
One might think this should conclude the account of the Kamakura period, but the Kamakura Shogunate still had other regional administrative offices.
・Chinzei Tandai established in Hakata (Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture): Fell on May 25
・Nagato Tandai established in Nagato (Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture): Surrendered on May 26
I cannot close the chapter on the Kamakura period without addressing the fall of the Chinzei Tandai and the surrender of the Nagato Tandai. We will go back about three months from this point to look at the developments in Kyushu.
On the 11th day of the intercalary second month, while Emperor Go-Daigo was calling for rebellions across the country, Michimasu Doi (?-1336) and Michitsuna Tokuno (?-1337) of Iyo Province rose in rebellion against the Nagato Tandai. Tokinao Kanazawa (?-1333), the Nagato Tandai, fought to suppress them but was defeated.
Subsequently, in the third month, the gokenin (shogunal retainers) of Kyushu planned a rebellion against the Chinzei Tandai.
・Taketoki Kikuchi (1292–1333)
・Sadatsune Shoni (1272–1336)
・Sadamune Otomo (?-1334)
These three individuals.
The three had been planning the rebellion together, but by chance, Hidetoki Akahashi (?-1333), the Chinzei Tandai, sent a message only to Taketoki Kikuchi saying,
“Appear before the Tandai.”
Kikuchi, fully expecting that the plan had been exposed, called out to Shoni and Otomo, saying,
“We have no choice but to rise now. Let us strike the Chinzei Tandai together.”
However, Otomo gave only an indecisive reply. As for Shoni, having heard reports that the Rokuhara Tandai was winning battle after battle around this time, he broke the alliance and plotted to side with the Chinzei Tandai.
Thus, the anti-shogunate movement, which was supposed to be a joint effort by the three, ended up being carried out by Kikuchi alone.
