Stories of the Japanese 01316 [Muromachi/Yoshimochi Period] The Death of Yamairi Tomoyoshi
In the end, it is hard to tell whether Yoshimochi and Mochiuji will actually fight or not.
Seeing the successive rebellions in Hitachi Province, Mochiuji decided to eliminate Yamairi Tomoyoshi, whom he considered the cause.
In the intercalary 10th month of Oei 29 (1422), Mochiuji sent a letter to Yamairi Tomoyoshi at Kuniyasu Castle (Hitachiota City, Ibaraki Prefecture) in the name of Kanto Kanrei Uesugi Norizane.
The document stated, "There are matters of suspicion, and the Kubo wishes to inquire directly, etc."
Since Norizane was only a 13-year-old boy at the time, it was clear that this was issued by Mochiuji's own will.
Tomoyoshi's second son, Yamairi Sukeyoshi, was worried and tried to stop him, but Tomoyoshi paid no heed and set off for Kamakura. It is said he left Kuniyasu Castle on the 6th of the intercalary 10th month and arrived in Kamakura on the 12th. Although he visited Mochiuji immediately upon arrival, he was not granted an audience, and he had no choice but to stay at the Satake residence in Kamakura that night.
Early the next morning, Enoshima Uesugi Norinao (?-1438), acting on Mochiuji's orders, attacked the Satake residence. Incidentally, Enoshima Uesugi Norinao was a member of the Uesugi clan, but he is often referred to by the name Enoshima because he was based at Enoshima Castle (Midori Ward, Yokohama City).
Tomoyoshi, who never expected to be tricked by the Kamakura Kubo, was completely off guard and was not armed at all.
"I have been deceived by that greenhorn" (words remaining in the Satake family documents).
Regretting this, he fled to the Yoritomo Hokkedo, where he committed ritual suicide along with his retainers.
The Yoritomo Hokkedo is the site of Yoritomo's grave, and it is also the place the Miura clan chose for their own ritual suicide during the Hoji Battle in the mid-Kamakura period (see episode 00665). Perhaps it is the most suitable place to die while asserting one's own legitimacy.
Upon learning of his father's sudden death, Yamairi Sukeyoshi barricaded himself in Nukada Castle (Naka City, Ibaraki Prefecture). In the 11th month, Satake Yoshito and others, acting on Mochiuji's orders, attacked Nukada Castle, but they could not easily capture it.
Since Yamairi Tomoyoshi was a person whom Shogun Yoshimochi had recommended as the Hitachi Shugo, killing him meant that Mochiuji had rebelled against the Shogun. According to Mansai's diary, Yoshimochi, whose face had been completely disgraced, was furious, saying,
"This is outrageous. Is this some kind of rash act?"
Mochiuji sent an envoy to Kyoto to explain, but Yoshimochi refused to see the envoy, kept him waiting for half a year, and then sent him away.
The relationship between Yoshimochi and Mochiuji was now on the verge of explosion.
The "Yoritomo Hokkedo" that appears this time can be reached in about 20 minutes on foot from Kamakura Station. You have to climb stone steps, so it is best to go in a season that is not too hot. Be careful in autumn and winter, as it can be slippery with fallen leaves.
