Creating My Own Ten Commandments
The author Soshu Shigyo published a book titled "Super Hagakure Theory" this summer.
You can see the book cover here.
When you open the cover, you will find the "Hagakure Ten Commandments" listed in white letters on a black background, consisting of ten phrases the author selected from "Hagakure".
The term "Ten Commandments" refers to the "Ten Commandments of Moses" found in the Book of Exodus in the Old Testament.
Using that as a model, the author compiled these "Hagakure Ten Commandments."
Let me introduce the background of how the author came up with the "Hagakure Ten Commandments" from "Super Hagakure Theory."
When he was in the fifth grade at a Protestant elementary school, the author watched the movie "The Ten Commandments" under the guidance of his teacher. He was deeply moved and thought, "Yes, after all, the Ten Commandments are necessary to establish one's own soul" (Soshu Shigyo, "Super Hagakure Theory," Jitsugyo no Nihon Sha, 2021, p. 202).
"So, in my case, I thought that the source of my own Ten Commandments should be 'Hagakure,' and I decided to make the philosophical phrases from 'Hagakure' that I particularly liked the central philosophy of my life. When I was in the fifth grade of elementary school, I carefully selected ten phrases as a definitive decision for my life."
Since then, until today at the age of seventy, he says he has lived a life that began with the "Hagakure Ten Commandments" and will end with them, and that has crystallized into "Super Hagakure Theory," which has now taken a form visible to others.
Reading about the background and motivation for how the author came up with the "Hagakure Ten Commandments," I had a thought.
"Wouldn't it be interesting to try selecting ten phrases for myself from the Bible?"
Many Christians have what they call "favorite Bible verses."
These are Bible verses that are important to them, which they recite and contemplate daily.
Usually, there aren't that many, but what I am proposing here is to select ten of them.
Whether you are a Christian or not, if you value the Bible and feel that the Bible is the foundation of your life, you should create "My Ten Commandments" from the Bible.
However, there is no need to stick to the Bible or "Hagakure"; it could be the "Heart Sutra," the "Bhagavad Gita," or any book or scripture that can be called a treasure of humanity and shows the path of the soul.
They are "ten phrases" from which your life begins and converges, "ten phrases" that stand in your way, sometimes gently and sometimes strictly, when you face the difficulties of life.
Also, it is not just a matter of choosing ten phrases; you must consider which phrase to place in which position, the relationship with the preceding and following phrases, and its positioning from the perspective of the whole.
How can one be prepared to say, "I will live the rest of my life based on these Ten Commandments"?
There is no need to show it to anyone.
In fact, it seems that precisely because it is kept secret, it becomes something that governs one's own soul more strongly and deeply.
The time spent choosing books and words without compromising on anything will surely become a unique dialogue with oneself.
“For those seeking material success, Hagakure has always been a book of madness. Even during the Edo period of the shogunate system, Hagakure was a banned book (omitted).
I am a person who reveres a banned book as a sacred text. Herein lies all of my good, and also all of my evil. For better or worse, Hagakure praises a life that ends in death after throwing oneself fully into it. That is precisely why I love Hagakure.”
At the beginning of this book, the author clearly states that even if one studies Hagakure, it will be of no use or benefit in this world.
“Living and dying solely for the cultivation of one's own soul. There is no other meaning to Hagakure.”
This likely applies just as well to the Bible and many other classics.
Certainly, there are books with titles like 'The Bible for Success in XX' or 'The Art of War for Success in XX'.
However, originally, such books that have withstood the test of time were not compiled for horizontal values or the realization of animalistic pleasures.
“Hagakure is a book that should only be read by those who wish to transcend humanity in the modern age. I wish to present a 'Super Hagakure' that transcends the modern disease of mere Hagakure research.”
It is said that Hagakure is a book to be read only by those who seriously seek the path of the soul and those who truly wish to live like a human being.
And it is also said that one cannot approach it through the method of research.
The same can be said for the Bible, the Heart Sutra, the Quran, and numerous other classics.
“To read a book, to read a text, is to make a mad gamble. And once you have read it in that way, you must sacrifice yourself for it, and you must live in accordance with it.”

For reference, I have included the 'Hagakure Ten Commandments'.
Hagakure Ten Commandments (Selected by So-shu Shiko from 'The Theory of Super-Hagakure')
First Commandment: Bushido is found in death.
Second Commandment: When faced with two choices, simply choose the one that leads to death quickly.
Third Commandment: To say that dying without achieving one's goal is a 'dog's death' is the pretentious martial way of the Kamigata region.
Fourth Commandment: Every morning and every evening, imagine yourself dying again and again.
Fifth Commandment: The ultimate form of love is, I believe, a love that is kept hidden.
Sixth Commandment: To endure for a lifetime and die with your feelings unexpressed is the true essence of love.
Seventh Commandment: Great deeds cannot be accomplished with a serious mind; one must become a madman and go into a frenzy of death.
Eighth Commandment: When in misfortune, those who grow weary are of no use.
Ninth Commandment: One should contemplate death throughout the day.
Tenth Commandment: As a human being, why should I be inferior to anyone else?
