#266 [Experience Report/Photos Included] I went to a men's nail salon and feel like I understand how women feel
Hello! I'm Umi-senpai, the young training brother.
In this magazine, I share the content of my daily morning podcast program, "Umi-senpai's Isshoumon RADIO."
I deliver little stories that are slightly helpful on various themes every morning, so please be sure to follow me!
I've heard people say, "It's an era where even men get their nails done now," but it seems there are pros and cons to men's nails.
Since I'm a man, I can't really stand from the perspective of what women like, but personally, I think men's nails suit people who do artistic work.
YOH, the bassist of my favorite band ORANGE RANGE, wears black nail polish, and it looks incredibly cool.
Good morning. This is Umi-senpai.
Thank you for always reading.
Today, I'm going to talk about how I went to a men's nail salon and feel like I understand women's feelings a little better.
I have a bit of a complex about my nails not being very pretty, and I've been wanting to get them cared for at a nail salon for a while, so I finally went the other day!
I'd like to write down an [Experience Report] today about what it was like.
The salon where I received the treatment is a men's specialty nail salon called [Otoko Nail], which has locations in Tokyo and Osaka.
Their concept is "A moment of peace for the fighting man," and it is a salon focused on creating a relaxing space for men who work hard every day.
There are several plans, but I chose the [Nail Standard Course] for my hands.
The price is [7,700 yen for both hands (Osaka: 6,600 yen) (tax included)], and the [time required was about 60 minutes].
As a conclusion right away, let's look at the photos to see how clean they actually became. The top is before the treatment, and the bottom is after. (iPhone standard camera)

The obvious difference is the [gloss]. It seems you can choose to have no gloss if you wish, but since I was there, I asked for it with gloss.
I was truly surprised. They became so clean that I couldn't believe they were my own hands. I found myself staring at my hands on the train ride home. I'm very satisfied.
Regarding the flow of the treatment, first, I entered the shop and was immediately taken to the treatment booth, where I took off my jacket and shoes and sat in a reclining chair.
Since it was a hand treatment this time, taking off my shoes was optional, but they said it was fine to take them off to help me relax.
First, they cut my nails using special [nippers]. It seems that store-bought nail clippers cut by pinching, which puts a lot of strain on the nails. They explained that nippers cause less impact on the nails, so they use them to cut carefully.
Next, I will use a file. It seems that nails look beautiful when they are symmetrical based on the pad of the finger, so I will shape them with a file. Also, it seems that about 1mm of the white part at the tip of the nail is just right.
After filing, I soak them in slightly warm water, and while doing that, I shape the nails on the other hand.
Once the shape is set, the next step is to remove the dead skin from the nails. Aside from the cuticle found at the base of the nail, there is apparently a thin, invisible layer of dead skin called the 'proximal nail fold cuticle' (loose cuticle).
Having this dead skin can hinder the growth of the nail, and it can also make it difficult for moisture to reach the actual nail even if you think you are moisturizing it.
That is precisely why removing this proximal nail fold cuticle cleanly allows the nails to grow beautifully.
After removing the dead skin, the next step is to remove the cuticles and hangnails. Once the cuticles are gone, the impression of the appearance changes significantly.
Next, to smooth out the unevenness on the surface of the nails, I will use a special nail polisher to tidy them up. They say they adjust the smoothness according to the thickness of the nail.
Now, for the final touch, I will apply oil to coat them. The oil they applied to me contained diamond powder, and since diamonds are hard, it apparently has a great effect on protecting the nails. However, I couldn't see the diamond powder or anything like that with my eyes.
Since it was my first time at a nail salon, I was so curious and kept asking about the procedure that 60 minutes passed in the blink of an eye.
Looking at the finished result, I felt incredibly happy. It felt like, 'I'm looking forward to every day starting tomorrow!' I feel like I somehow understand how women feel when they get their nails done.
It seems that the keys to nail care are getting enough protein and moisturizing. Good nails are moderately thick and have a smooth surface.
When I asked the person in charge of the procedure, 'What kind of men usually come to the nail salon?', they said, 'There are many business owners.'
It seems their mindset is different after all. Because they can pay attention to fine details in their personal grooming, they must have excellent skills for achieving results in their work as well.
Also, it seems that elderly people who find it difficult to cut their own nails use the service. For those who can no longer bend over, cutting their own toenails is a struggle, so they come to the salon regularly to have them trimmed.
Wow, I wish I had realized this excitement sooner. I think all men should do it. It costs 7,700 yen per session, and they recommend a frequency of once every 2 to 3 weeks, which I don't think is cheap at all. However, when you actually do it, the sense of happiness makes it worth the money easily.
It's not just the finish of the nails; I was able to relax very much as per the concept, with drinks provided and stylish jazz playing in the shop. It seems there are even some customers who sleep the entire time during the procedure and wake up when it's finished.
It is very satisfying, so please give it a try.
