Thinking of a story for my son on nights when the bedtime BGM plays
In our home at night, my son's favorite bedtime BGM plays from the Alarmo.
In the dimly lit room with the lights off, the bedtime BGM and the music from the YouTube videos my husband secretly watches play together. It is very chaotic. But amidst that seemingly mismatched blend of music, my son falls asleep.
Unlike when we parents used to put him to bed, now when it's time for the bedtime BGM to play from the Alarmo, he gets into his futon by himself and follows his pre-sleep routine.
Before turning off the lights, he reads "Oshiri Tantei" (Butt Detective) over and over.
The book cards he receives from my uncle for his birthday are used to complete his collection of the entire Butt Detective series.
And then, he falls asleep to the bedtime BGM, which is slightly chaotic depending on the day.
When he was little, I was so busy just trying to get through each day that I couldn't have imagined him one day choosing his own books and falling asleep surrounded by his favorite stories and BGM.
My son, who grew up loving Minecraft, Mario, and books, loves the library, and I hear he even joined the library committee at school and does committee work in the library. Even I, his mother, never thought he would grow up to be such a book lover that he would join the library committee.
When we go to the library, he chooses the books he wants to read and becomes completely absorbed in them.
Watching him like that, I started wanting to try writing a story that he could enjoy too.
A story with a mystery, a bit of humor, and one that doesn't leave him behind when things get difficult. Not a book explaining developmental traits, but a book where he can naturally enter the story even with those traits.
Watching him, I think little by little about what kind of protagonist would be good, what kind of incident I should set up, and maybe it would be nice to scatter some mysteries like this.
Would a story with a protagonist who is an upper-grade elementary school boy, the same age as my son, be good?
Usually, I write stories with public submissions, book publications, and the readers beyond that in mind.
However, for this story, which I haven't written a single character of yet, there is already someone I want to read it.
That person is my son. Will he laugh and get absorbed in it? Will he get bored halfway through? Will he mercilessly point out, "I don't understand this part"?
After the bedtime BGM ends and my son is fast asleep with his soft breathing, I open my smartphone and make just one note.
While watching my son's interests and reactions, I will gradually nurture a story that doesn't exist yet, aimed at the reader right in front of me.
And then, I go to sleep too, thinking about the junior-level story I am writing for my son.
