Community Development through the Know-How of 'Collaboration'!
Tuesday, June 23, 2026
I was in charge of the Citizen College 'Regional Power Up Seminar' held at the Lifelong Learning Center in Kokurakita Ward, Kitakyushu City!
I wonder how many years I've been in charge of this now; I am also a graduate of this seminar.
In this series of programs, different instructors take turns each week to foster human resources who will become key figures in community development.
The session I am in charge of is, if I do say so myself, a very important one:
It is about 'Community'.

Each community has completely different characteristics.
The coexistence with buildings, terrain, and nature is completely different, and the people who live there are different as well.
In communities with various colors and different expressions, there are bound to be challenges.
From big challenges to small ones, from immediate challenges to hidden ones.
They are all diverse.
I think it is important to start by observing them.
Current Situation ⇒ Challenges ⇒ Ideal State ⇒ Means/Strategies
I structured this lecture in that order.

First, after I introduced myself,
we started with an icebreaker where everyone talked about 'what they like about their own town'!!

The first theme: 'Regional Challenges'.
I imagine there are many.
Everyone's feelings, thoughts, and concerns.
I had them voice them out loud.

As expected, various regional challenges emerged from everyone.
I have the notes from the whiteboard, so I will post them later.
To address these challenges, I spoke about the following three sensibilities that I want to keep in mind throughout the entire lecture.
1. For better or worse, a community is made of 'people'.
That is,
I believe the shape and form of a community change depending on how the 'people' in that community are.

2. The existence of 'togetherness' is very important.
Everyone coming together, sharing their thoughts, and working on things.
Communities often shoulder that realm of 'togetherness'.
It is not about work or personal responsibility; it is about feelings and thoughts becoming the driving force.

3. Fostering 'Collaborative' Relationships
Because passion is at the root, I think it is good to be able to work on community development in a way that captures people's attention and understands their feelings.
I believe that how we can create 'mutually proactive' collaboration, rather than mere cooperation, is a major factor.

As a workshop,
after having you discuss the existence of 'co-existence',
we set up a space to think once again about 'the role and significance of the region'.
When thinking about regional issues and their roles, a lot of miscellaneous things cross my mind one after another.
I made this four-quadrant division because I wanted to organize them a little.
I think it was a good invention, if I do say so myself.
For details, please see the article posted next.

We divided them into these four quadrants and had you discuss your thoughts on each region.

We had each group share their presentations, and I tried writing them down.
We received many opinions that each quadrant is not independent, but interacts with each other and will have a positive influence.
Each one may be an issue or an activity to work on, but I also felt that they are linked and connected to others.
Also, it emerged that 'community' and 'human connections' cut across all fields, and that they ultimately return to that or are at the root of everything, which made for a very wonderful exchange of opinions.

The morning passed in the blink of an eye,
and from the afternoon, we finally delved deeper into 'collaboration'.
How should we create 'collaboration' where both parties are proactive?
What is collaboration in the first place?
I proceeded with the talk while giving examples one by one.

That said, although the topic of collaboration is enough to take many days, I spoke about it speedily.
I will post related articles about the content that was brought up at this time, so please take a look at them as well.

Collaboration is different from efficiency,
and it is certainly not something that can be achieved overnight.
It is something that is realized by building relationships, paying attention little by little, and exchanging opinions.
It is a task of bringing out and enhancing each other's motivation and drive.
There are people who have a good sense and can put it into practice,
but it would be very good if you could learn to do it intentionally.
We also had everyone discuss things that left an impression regarding collaboration and actual examples.
Finally, we also had a general discussion,
and a lively exchange of opinions took place.

Things like wanting to know a little more about this part,
what can be done realistically right away,
or what should we do in a case like this?
I was very impressed by your enthusiastic and forward-looking attitude.
We also held a final group discussion regarding strategies for local issues.
How can we expand our circle of acquaintances within the community?
How can we create spaces to connect more with children?
What should we do about neighborhood associations that are gradually becoming exhausted?
How should we bring together a group that is not on the same page?
There were many very practical topics like these, and
I was filled with the feeling of, 'Let's work hard together!!'

In this way, so that each region can advance its community development more actively,
all of you who will become 'key persons in community development' are learning with a positive mindset!!!
It is very encouraging!!
My talk may have been long, but
your discussions were also very heated and wonderful!!
Thank you very much!!
