When I left it to the students, they made an incredible leap: Shii School District Asobousai

On November 26, 2022, we held 'Asobousai' (Disaster Prevention Play) at Shii Elementary School in Kokuraminami-ku, Kitakyushu, where children and local residents came together.

We held a similar Asobousai last fiscal year, where we used the entire community center building and had participants go around to each room in a stamp rally format. While there was a sense of excitement with so many participants and not knowing what was ahead, it was hard to see the whole picture, and some people said they wanted to know what the atmosphere was like or what kind of games were being played, so this time we held it in the 'gymnasium'.

Many people participated, from children to local residents.

It's happy (Shii), it's fun (Shii)! That's the Shii school district.
They have also been working hard for many years to be a town of disaster prevention!
How reliable (Shii) they are!!

It became an event that embodied community building with children at the center.
People of many generations participated, from the children's parents to the senior generation who lead local activities.

Let's have a project that children can enjoy!
With that in mind, so many people watched over them with warm eyes and offered their support. It's heartwarming, isn't it?

Scenes from the icebreaker games

This Asobousai was a challenge for us.

The students from the Sukiccha Academy took the lead and handled everything from planning to operation.

・Kitakyushu City University Crime and Disaster Prevention Project MATE’s
・Kitakyushu City University 3Club
members played an active role.

For MATE's, there were five major challenges.

① Handle everything from progress to operation themselves.
② Prepare the goods for the Asobousai booths themselves.
③ Come up with new ideas.
④ Have the second-year students take the lead in operations as a generational change.
⑤ Collaborate with SoftBank's Pepper!

It's amazing, isn't it?
Everyone did this properly as a private activity, even though it doesn't count as course credit... I take my hat off to them.
When I was a student, I was hungover every day and slept until noon... (laughs)

They also successfully overcame the five challenges!!
It was truly wonderful.

3Club was in charge of the overall program in the second half.

They came up with games that involve moving your body and take advantage of the fact that they are held in a gymnasium.
It's a disaster prevention education version of 'Daruma-san ga Koronda' (Red Light, Green Light),
called 'Daruma-san no Saigai' (Daruma-san's Disaster).

Instead of 'Koronda,' the words change to things like 'Lightning' or 'Fire!'
In addition to freezing, you have to strike an appropriate pose for that specific disaster.
Yeah! That's interesting!!
I had to leave early that day, and it's such a shame I couldn't see it in person! If anyone took a video, please send it to me!!

I met with the CSR department at SoftBank, and they asked if there was any way to contribute to society by utilizing Pepper, which children love, in the field of disaster prevention education, like Asobousai.

I thought it would be great if they could collaborate with the student members to create something new, so I introduced them to the Kitakyushu University MATE's and the Kyushu Kyoritsu University SDGs Challenge Action Research Group.

I heard that the Kyoritsu University group held a session at the Asobousai workshop in Fukuoka City a week ago, and it was a great success with the children.

On this day, the MATE's team also took on the challenge of a game in collaboration with Pepper!

What's amazing is that both universities are creating the Pepper programs themselves.
It's not just them running a project brought in by SoftBank.
There is infinite potential in both the students and Pepper, and they worked on this with their own creativity and ingenuity.

It's a game where you make a disaster prevention backpack for Pepper.
Pepper says what it wants, and from several options, you bring the appropriate item, and when you answer 'yes' or 'no' to Pepper's questions,
Pepper responds with gestures, saying, 'That's exactly what I wanted!'
The venue erupted with excitement for every single correct answer.

Wow, this is wonderful.
I could never do this myself.
I'm so glad I left it to the students.

Actually, I was worried, but they really took it to a whole new level.
Amazing.

Now then, let's introduce each of the programs for
Asobousai!!

Disaster Pig's Tail

Disaster Darts

Disaster Prevention Goods Memory Game

Disaster Prevention Map Puzzle

Disaster Avoidance Rube Goldberg Machine

Point Activities Through Mutual Aid

Collaboration with Pepper: Disaster Prevention Goods Karuta

Hypertension Prevention: Salt Content Game

Everyone from the Kokuraminami Ward Office Health and Welfare Division and the student hypertension prevention ambassadors also participated!!!

Each booth was managed very well, and it was truly wonderful.
I watched over them until that point, then headed to the next venue~. Sorry about that~.
By the way, I went to this next.

This time, I left everything to the students—student-led, student-driven, and student-planned!
I think it made an incredible leap and turned out much better than if I had managed and operated it myself.
If I had kept it under my control, it probably would have only been realized within those limits, but by leaving it to everyone, there were very significant results and growth.
It was very good.
Thank you.
