The Interior Perspective Revolution is Just Around the Corner! Trying Out Co-Creation with AI

1. Recap of the previous post

In my previous post, I took on the challenge of generating interior images using Leonardo AI based on suggestions from Momiji (an interior AI). I was amazed by the AI's fidelity and its excellence in creating atmosphere, but manual work is still required for furniture placement and incorporating new ideas.

This time, as a further challenge, I will try uploading a hand-drawn perspective sketch to Leonardo AI to see how much it can be utilized for image generation.

2. The process of uploading a hand-drawn perspective to AI

Characteristics of the hand-drawn perspective

The perspective sketch used for this attempt was a very simple line drawing.

I used graph paper for the hand-drawing and uploaded a simple perspective sketch showing only the furniture placement and room layout to Leonardo AI. I also added the following prompt to specify the details of the space.

"A Scandinavian-style modern living and dining space that breathes nature, full of warmth and functional beauty. In the center of the room, there is a simple wooden dining table and chairs with clean lines. The kitchen in the back is partially separated by a low wooden counter with minimal storage space. Natural light streams in through large windows with thin cream-colored curtains, and light-colored wooden flooring adds warmth. Carefully selected minimalist houseplants are intentionally placed, and a single sophisticated wooden pendant light hangs above, providing focused lighting. The design incorporates warm monochrome tones of beige, gray, and white, emphasizing natural materials, clean lines, and functionality."

3. The resulting image and its characteristics

Faithfully reflecting the line drawing

Surprisingly, the AI reflected the line drawing of the hand-drawn perspective very faithfully.

In particular, it even incorporated the lines of the graph paper as tile shapes, and I was impressed by its reproduction capability. On the other hand, because my unskilled line drawing was reflected as is, the result was an image that required quite a bit of retouching.

For example...

• The position and layout of the furniture were reproduced exactly as drawn by hand, but because the simple line drawing lacked information, accessories and details were insufficient.

• Unintended elements were reflected, such as the graph paper lines appearing as tiles, which required adjustment.

4. The Process of Making Revisions

As this attempt showed, simply leaving the generation to AI does not lead to a sufficient level of completion. In particular, the main task was correcting areas where the AI misidentified parts due to the ambiguity of the hand-drawn perspective lines.

Specific revision tasks

• Correcting AI misidentifications

For example, there were several places where the AI misidentified ambiguous lines as furniture or floor plans, resulting in unintended layouts. There were also instances where cabinets disappeared without me noticing, or some furniture was omitted. I used a paint tool to redraw these and correct them to their original shapes and placements.

• Supplementing accessories

Often, accessories that I hadn't drawn in the hand-drawn perspective (such as houseplants, items on tables, or lighting) were not reflected in the generated images, so I added these one by one.

• Defects in lighting and furniture shapes

As a problem specific to AI generation, lighting placement was sometimes strange, or chair backrests and legs were deformed in some cases. These are common occurrences with AI, but I corrected them to a certain extent and decided to overlook the rest, accepting them as "AI-like." If you get too hung up on the details, there is no end to it. I feel it is more constructive to spend that time generating many images and gaining inspiration instead.

Final Polish: Leonardo AI's Ultra Upscale Feature

After finishing the revision work, I ultimately utilized Leonardo AI's "Ultra Upscale" feature. This feature finishes the generated images in even higher resolution and photorealism, which allowed me to significantly improve the overall level of completion.

However, there are cases where strange parts that cannot be fully corrected even with upscaling remain. Even so, the value of the new inspiration and ideas gained from the entire generated image is extremely high, and I felt that rather than pursuing perfection, generating many images and selecting the best elements from them is the way to maximize the potential of AI.

5. My Thoughts on the Future Design Process

Great Potential Even for Those Who Struggle with Perspective Drawing

So far, I have introduced two methods: how to upload photos to AI, and how to upload hand-drawn perspective sketches.

What I felt through this experiment is that Leonardo AI will become a very useful tool for those who are not good at creating perspectives.

Even if you are not good at hand-drawing, by simply uploading a simple line drawing, the AI will finish it into a surprisingly realistic photo-real image. In particular, I felt that being able to complete coloring and fine details in a short time would be a great help in streamlining tasks that used to take a long time.

Also, when you are worried about furniture placement or color choices, using AI to generate a few images often leads to new ideas. I think it is a creative tool that should be paid attention to as something you can try out easily.

About the next theme

Next time, I would like to take the "interior worries" I received from everyone as a subject and compile concrete solutions and proposals into an article.
