AI Learning Compensation Program Launches! A New Revenue Mechanism to Make It Easier to Continue Creating

To help creators gain new revenue opportunities, we are launching an initiative to provide content for AI training to AI companies. This will allow us to return revenue earned as compensation when your content is used as training data by AI companies. Consequently, we will be partially revising the note Terms of Service effective August 1, 2025 (Friday).

Creators can choose whether to provide their content for AI training and whether to receive compensation. If you do not wish to provide data for AI training, you can change your settings at any time. Please note that this applies to all text content posted on note (including free and paid articles, and membership benefits). Image, audio, and video content other than text are not included.

This mechanism will be applied starting August 1, 2025 (Friday). As a preparation period for creators, we have set up a window from today until the end of July where you can configure whether or not to provide your content. If you wish to exclude your content from AI training, please change your settings on the settings screen.

However, if you have already turned on 'Indicate refusal to participate in generative AI training,' the initial setting will be 'Off (do not participate).'

Currently, note is in discussions with multiple AI companies to provide content and earn compensation. We aim to create a mechanism to appropriately distribute the revenue earned from this to creators, thereby creating new revenue opportunities for you.

[Effective from 8/1 (Fri)] About the AI Learning Compensation Program

The AI Learning Compensation Program is a mechanism where compensation is paid when content from participating creators is used for AI training by AI companies.

We will distribute the revenue obtained from AI companies to creators after deducting note's operating fees. Furthermore, the partner AI companies will be limited to reliable partners from the perspectives of technical transparency, ethics, and legal compliance.

We anticipate that compensation will be provided via bank transfer or Amazon gift cards, etc.
Details regarding the official timing of compensation, methods, and the distribution mechanism will be announced later via official note articles and social media.

How to set or change your AI Learning Compensation Program settings

The setting for this program is 'Participate in the Compensation Program' by default.

In this case, all articles you create will be subject to AI training. If you wish to exclude articles from your account from training, please change your settings using the following steps. Changing settings is currently limited to web browsers, but we are developing a feature to allow this from the app as well.

Additionally, if you wish to change settings for individual articles, you will be able to toggle ON/OFF for each article starting June 30 (Mon).
We will continue to make improvements to make it even easier to use based on your feedback.

1. Regarding content provision for the entire account

If you do not wish to participate in this program and want to exclude all content from AI training candidates, you can change this using the following steps. However, if you have already turned on 'Indicate refusal to participate in generative AI training,' the initial setting will be 'Off (do not participate).'

1. Select [ Settings ] from the creator icon in the top right.

2. Check [ Participate in the AI Learning Compensation Program ] under article settings. The initial setting is ON (green), so if you do not wish to participate, switch it to OFF (gray).

2. Regarding content provision per article (Scheduled for release on June 30)

This is how to set it if you want to keep your entire account as a training target but exclude specific articles. We are also considering a feature to change multiple articles at once.
1. Open the article you want to exclude from AI training and select [ Proceed to Publish ] in the top right of the editor screen.

2. In the article details settings, switch [ Participate in the AI Learning Compensation Program ] to OFF (gray).

Why are we doing this?

While generative AI greatly supports our creative activities, the mechanisms for licensing training data and compensating creators are not yet fully established. There is also the challenge that it is difficult to completely prevent works on the internet from already being used for AI training.

In light of this situation, note conducted three proof-of-concept experiments from February 2025 to provide compensation to creators through AI training and concluded that a mechanism to compensate creators is indeed important.

Many creators participated in these proof-of-concept experiments, and we received positive feedback such as, "I felt my creative work was being fairly evaluated," and "I have high expectations for new revenue possibilities."

Based on this feedback, note has decided to offer a new option for creators to earn revenue and is launching this initiative. Furthermore, regarding this theme where technology, creativity, and social issues intersect, we will continue to work on building a better ecosystem while engaging in ongoing discussions with our creators.

Q. What range of content is subject to AI training? Does this include images and videos?
A. All text content posted on note is subject to AI training. This includes free articles, as well as the text portions of paid articles and articles published as membership benefits. Content other than text, such as images, audio, and video, is not subject to AI training.

Q. I participated in a past proof-of-concept experiment; will the content from that time also be eligible for this revenue compensation?
A. Yes, it will be eligible. The content of creators who cooperated in past proof-of-concept experiments is also eligible for revenue compensation under this new mechanism.

Q. How much will the compensation be?
A. At this time, the specific compensation amount has not been decided. Based on the results of past proof-of-concept experiments, we are designing a logic that can appropriately distribute profits to everyone. We will provide an update once the details are finalized. Please note that profit distribution to creators will be the amount received from AI companies minus note's operating fees.

Q. Why is the initial setting set to "Participate"?
A. The purpose of this program is to provide compensation to creators and maximize that amount. The more content provided, the stronger our bargaining power with AI companies becomes, making it easier to increase the compensation amount for each individual. Therefore, we have set the initial setting to "Participate" in providing data for AI training. Of course, if you do not wish to provide data for AI training, you can easily change the setting to "Do not participate" from your My Page at any time.
