A life of not discarding, a life of discarding. There is no single right answer. Which one do you choose?
The weight of things is the weight of the heart.
I am Yuko Shirasaka, an expert in 'here and now' estate liquidation.

The richness of living surrounded by things
There is a life that chooses 'not to discard.'
Collections carefully gathered, items filled with memories of family, tools that might be useful for something someday. If being surrounded by these things brings peace to your heart and gives you the reassurance that 'I have built up this much time,' then that is a perfectly valid answer.
Even at the scene of estate liquidation, I can sometimes feel how much the deceased cherished their belongings and lived with attachment to them. That is by no means 'wrong.' Because things can sometimes become a pillar of support for our hearts.
The lightness of living by stripping things away
On the other hand, there is a life that chooses to 'discard (let go).' A way of life that values agility, carefully selecting only the things truly necessary for the current self, and being able to fly anywhere lightly. Because there is empty space, a fresh breeze can blow in, and you can jump into new challenges without hesitation.
The 'here and now' philosophy that I, Shirasaka, advocate is closer to this side. Thanking your 'past self' and continuing to update your current self to the latest version. That lightness is comfortable for me now.
A professional does not deny the 'environment' or the 'way of life'
As an estate liquidation professional, no matter how overflowing with items a site may be, I never deny the way of life of the person who lived there. No matter how harsh the site, my style is that 'a professional makes no excuses and does not choose their environment.'
What we face is not the quality of the items, but 'whether the person living there now is happy.'
If you are surrounded by many things and feel a sense of suffocation, or if your steps toward the future have become heavy, it might be a sign that the 'life of not discarding' no longer suits you.
Conversely, if you feel lonely in a sparse room, you might need more 'things to cherish.'
Which one do you want to choose 'now'?
What is important is not the trends of the world or someone else's standards, but 'how you want to live.'
A life of embracing everything from the past and walking slowly.
A life of thanking items that have finished their role, graduating from them, and moving forward with the speed of light.
You can choose either. And you can choose again at any time.
If you wish to 'live lightly from now on, updating yourself!', I will fully support that first step. Entrusting heavy books to a courier service for purchase, saying goodbye to shoes you can no longer wear, and creating space on your bookshelf for 'invitations to the future.' Each of those decisions creates your new story.
Thinking 'I have to discard' makes it painful. But if you think 'it's okay to choose either,' doesn't your heart feel a little lighter?
When you wake up in the morning, which way of life would you like to start your new day with? Whichever you choose, I am on your side!
Whatever way of life you choose, I hope your 'now' shines brightly.
