#225 [Notes] The 1-to-10 Story: Thinking About the Generational Gap
My youngest brother and I are eight years apart.
Even though we were born to the same parents and raised on the same home-cooked meals, I still cannot help but feel a strong "generational gap."
Today, I would like to use the "1-to-10 story" to illustrate this "generational gap."
◼️ The 60s to 80s generation (Senior to Parent generation)
The generation that was expected to "learn by watching" without being taught things from 1 to 10. Furthermore, it was a strict generation expected to complete tasks up to "10" through their own effort and ingenuity, without being told anything or having every little thing explained.
(Therefore, they expect this of their juniors as well. They are the so-called "Force-user" generation lol)
◼️ The 50s to 60s generation (My generation)
The generation that was taught things up to about "1 or 2," and then expected to think for themselves and "finish up to 10!!" for the rest. Since we didn't want to get scolded, we worked hard to think for ourselves and finish at "10" or even "10 plus alpha" lol
(The generation expected to "read the room" and "read between the lines.")
◼️ The 40s to 50s generation (Youngest brother's generation)
The generation that only finishes things up to the point they were "taught." If you don't teach them from "1 to 10," they won't finish up to "10." Since they don't want to get scolded, they don't do anything extra lol
(The see-no-evil, hear-no-evil, speak-no-evil generation.)
◼️ The 30s to 40s generation (Junior generation)
The generation that doesn't try to learn things from "1 to 10." They are the generation that can quickly finish up to "10" using smartphones or AI without having to do such troublesome things.
However, they are the generation that is immediately stuck if the power goes out.
◼️ The 20s to 30s generation (Newcomer generation)
The generation that doesn't even think that things "go from 1 to 10" in the first place lol
They have received attentive service since birth, and even after becoming working adults, they think the company is there to "provide service" to them.
Therefore, if you ask them to "finish it at 10!" without any preamble, they are the "glass generation" who will immediately sue you for power harassment or moral harassment, or suffer a mental breakdown.
🔷🔷🔷
This "1-to-10 story" is a classic topic that often gets lively during get-togethers and drinking parties among managers.
Of course, regardless of generation, there are excellent people who can brilliantly finish up to "10" after being told only "1" or "2," while there are others who won't or can't do it even if you carefully explain from "1" to "10."
In fact, there are even newcomers who, when you try to teach them step-by-step from "1 to 10," will ask, "Is that my job?" lol
"What did you join this company for?!"
I'm the one who wants to be taught!!💢
Everyone at the drinking party bursts into laughter🤣🤣🤣 something like that lol
However, managers are generally required to ensure that anyone on their staff can finish at "10." That is the "management skill" required of a manager.
If there are 10 staff members, the company expects a "productivity" of "100" with everyone finishing at "10." If they hire 100 people, they expect a "productivity" of "1000."
However, humans are "flesh and blood," not cyborgs manufactured on the same production line with serial numbers. There are "generational gaps," "individualities," different environments they were raised in, and even different "values."
No matter how hard they try, there are those who can only finish up to "5" or "6," and those who cannot.
Because of this, even if you hire 100 people, you cannot actually secure a productivity of "1000." At best, if you manage them well, you get "700 to 800." The remaining "300 to 200" is covered by overtime or follow-up by the managers...
In the end, the burden of those who cannot do "10" often falls on those who can. Disliking this, the talented ones leave the company.
Well, there are some who can finish "200" on their own, and hiring 10 of them to easily clear a productivity of "2000"... well, you can't just whip up an "elite team" like that, haha.
We are constantly forced to make strict personnel adjustments.
"Man, that's a headache... 😭😭😭"
Usually, this is about where the party would always come to an end.
I think the "story of 1 to 10" also applies to "nursing care".
My father kept my youngest brother by his side the longest and doted on him, but when it came to "nursing care," he called me.
At first, I thought it was because I was a "daughter" (female help), but I think it was probably more than that; this "story of 1 to 10" was at work.
My youngest brother is a sincere, kind, and good man, but when it comes to my father, he "only does what he is told." After all, he doesn't want to be scolded by our father or mother.
I don't think that's a reflection of his capability, but rather that it's a generational thing. They are the "ice age generation" and struggled to find employment. They finally landed a job, so they fear being scolded by their superiors and having their evaluation lowered more than anything else.
I, on the other hand, because I don't want to be scolded, after doing the "what I was told" part—the "1 to 2"—I consider "3" through "9" and finish it up to "10" before submitting it. That is the generation I belong to, having earned social recognition that way.
Naturally, my father's satisfaction level is higher with me than with my youngest brother.
This is not about "family relationships" like being the "eldest daughter" or "second son," nor is it about "gender differences"; it is clearly a "difference in generational perspectives." (Well, it might also be because it's a "service industry" job, haha.)
The reason why young people in their 30s and 40s are not good at dealing with the elderly or elderly care is probably because the "ecology of the elderly" far exceeds the information that can be obtained from smartphones and AI, haha.
In particular, with "dementia patients," you really have to look at "1," then think and imagine for yourself, and take appropriate action, otherwise you can never reach "10."
Just relaying answers obtained from SNS or AI to the elderly won't solve anything, and the elderly won't be satisfied. For them, elderly people who are not satisfied with the answers from their "ultimate tools" are nothing more than a "threat."
I wish the elderly would stop spreading such cryptic "Force" as well...
Other generations aren't free enough to be decoding that.
And above all, what was once "10" will eventually slowly become "0"... and even if you try to manage that with the "Force," it's impossible.
As for me, I hope that when I've gone down to about "5," the "reaper" comes to pick me up, haha.
No, if anything, I'd be fine passing away at "9" lol
Just like *thud*!!☆, just like *thud*!! lol
— What are you talking about?! —
No, it's fine...
As long as there's someone who secretly understands, that's enough lol
