Design that Brings Out a Sense of Luxury 💎 ~Learning from Today's Trending Behavioral Economics~

Hello, this is Ikemoto😊!

Today, I would like to share some thoughts on

how to create a design that conveys a sense of luxury💎?

by incorporating
a perspective from behavioral economics
!!

🌈 Tips for a Design that Brings Out a Sense of Luxury
~Behavioral Economics: Learning About Human Decision-Making~

Are there times when you think,
"I want to bring out a sense of luxury"
in your products or services?

Recently, I have been learning about
"human decision-making" from books on behavioral economics.

The book "Behavioral Economics is the Ultimate Discipline"

is very interesting!
Simply put, it's fascinating!!

↓↓↓↓↓↓

↑It's a relatively recent book^^

It is said that people act as if they are acting on their own will,
but they aren't, right?

They make "irrational" decisions. After all, if we were rational,

for example...
we wouldn't think of sacrificing our lives in a terrorist attack

to contribute to an organization, would we?
Even though the probability of winning the lottery

is very low,
we buy tickets because of the
expectation and excitement that "I might win."
Even when on a diet,

if there are delicious-looking sweets
in front of us, we end up eating them, don't we?
I learned that in the background of this,

there are factors such as

◎Cognitive biases
◎Situations
◎Emotions

.
Among these, there were also hints for

creating "a sense of luxury".If you design with this knowledge versus
designing without it,

wouldn't the results be different...?
I would like to introduce a section that made me think that today!
So, here we go!!

🌈 Should a luxury watch be displayed
vertically or diagonally? Which one?

You can probably imagine this, right?

(I want to make a sample later!)

In the book, there are two advertising photos
as samples.

Photos wearing the same wristwatch.

The same model, and the pose with
hands in pockets is also the same.

The only difference is...

↓↓↓↓↓↓

Just the "orientation of the watch."

A: The watch is oriented vertically
B: The watch is oriented diagonally

Now,
which one do you think
appears more attractive
to the consumer?

The correct answer is,
Ta-da!

A: The watch is oriented vertically

!

When people see something vertical, they unconsciously
harbor feelings of "standing above others," "getting ahead," and "superiority."

This story also links to excellent books✨ like
"Basic Easy Layout" and "Design that Communicates with Sensibility"
by Visual Design Laboratory!

(By the way... these are excellent books that I don't want you to be misled by the current number of reviews.
As you will understand once you read them,
I, who learned design through self-study,
was saved many times by books from Visual Design Laboratory.)

When creating a good layout,
there are three styles,
and among them...

one of the S-styles (Spiritual Taste) is the
Symmetry Type”.

Symmetry is prestigious
(Empathy is universal!!)

Shrinesandchurchesare arranged
symmetricallylike buildings, which provides stability,
creating a sense of calm and prestige,
so it is introduced as the “most stable type.”
Even though I have studied it in terms of layout,

I was able to learn about it deeply from this behavioral economics perspective,
and I feel my understanding has deepened even further!
Now, here is the next quiz!

🌈 Water bottles.
When you want to create a sense of luxury,
which one do you choose?

Please try to imagine it!
There are two bottles.

↓↓↓↓↓↓

A: A taller, slender bottle
B: A shorter, wider bottle

If you want to make a bottle that exudes luxury,
which one should you choose?

The answer is,
Ta-da!

A: A taller, slender bottle

!

People intuitively feel that tall things have
“power, authority, and luxury,” and
when they see short things,
they feel “security and approachability.”

※Citation: Namie Sagara, “Behavioral Economics is the Strongest Academic Discipline,” Publisher, June 8, 2023, First Edition, p. 140

We feel this way unconsciously, too,
don't we?
Humans are mysterious!!

Kiki and Boubaexperiment with shapes,
is it something like that? ^^
(↑ This topic of

collective unconsciousis alsointeresting, so please try searching for it ^^)

🌈 Summary

For example, there are also:

✅ The story about the two thinking modes of the brain
✅ The story about how the five senses also become “cognitive habits”
✅ The reason why two episodes play automatically on Netflix

And so on, evidence from experiments and such are introduced,
and it is all very interesting to read!

Besides, it's great training for looking at yourself from an objective perspective 💡

By the way...
There were also many points that connected to other books like "Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion."

It ended up sounding a bit like a book review article ^^;
If you're interested,
please do give it a read, perhaps over the year-end holidays!

-- P.S. Are you sending out New Year's cards??

With price hikes this year,
fewer people will be sending New Year's cards, right 😥

I looked into it a bit...

For those who don't plan to send them,

6 out of 10 people won't be sending them (over 60%)

is what it said!!

By the way, from acquaintances and friends too,
"I think I'll stop starting this year 😌"
messages like that have been trickling in.

How do you interpret this??

If you think about this in terms of...
business,

it's a CHANCE!!!!!

isn't it?

With fewer New Year's cards,
the likelihood of yours being seen increases.

You might need to put some thought into the content, but

since paper media is often easier to get noticed,
you can use it for sales promotion ✨
