Top 50

When I turned on the TV for the first time in a while this morning,
they were doing a feature on a sport called squash.

A player ranked around the top 4 in Japan was on,
and they said, "Japan's level globally is around the top 50."
I thought, "Wait a minute, is 50th place really a rank you announce as a 'top' position?" but

I thought it was a nice, positive way of putting it.
I think I'll start using it from now on.

Even if I'm at the bottom of a class of 30, I'll say I'm in the top 30 of the class.
If there are 1,000 applicants for a competition and I don't get selected, I'll say, "Well, I was in the world's top 1,000 this time."
