What type of person feels the most happiness in the future?? [Positive Psychology 1st #10]
This psychology course,
which we have delivered over 10 sessions,
is finally reaching
the end of Season 1 with this episode.
Up until now,
we have unraveled
the mechanisms of the "mind"
from various angles,
and this episode serves as a summary.
Professor Martin Seligman,
the founder of
positive psychology,
believed that
there are five elements
to the state in which humans
truly feel,
"Ah, I am happy."
That is
what I have been talking about,
the "PERMA"
model.
1. Positive Emotion
Daily excitement
(positive emotions)
2. Engagement
Being so absorbed that you lose track of time
(flow)
3. Relationships
Bonds that connect hearts
(rich human relationships)
4. Meaning
An unwavering sense of purpose
(meaning and purpose in life)
5. Accomplishment
Small steps forward
(achieving goals)
The higher these five
barometers are
for a person,
You can live every day
happily
and vibrantly.
On the other hand,
within the human heart,
there exists a drawer of "strengths"
that summarizes
only the bright parts of emotions and
positive qualities,
categorized into 24 types.
(In psychology, this is called the VIA Classification.)
To use an analogy,
it is like a long-established Japanese restaurant where
from the appetizer
to small bowls, side dishes,
and warm soups,
24 different types of
varied menu items
are lined up
on a tray,
and although these
all come out in
completely different bowls,
behind the seasoning of
all of them,
the basics of cooking,
the five seasonings of"sa-shi-su-se-so"
are present,
and
behind every strength,
these five basic seasonings (PERMA)
are deeply involved,
that is the feeling.
So,
out of these 24
strengths,
which drawer
does the person who opens it most often
use to
"five types of happiness"
the
most
perceive
type??
This connection was
identified through
data analysis by
Dr. Scott Barry
Kaufman's
research.
According to the doctor's analysis,
each strength has
the role of bringing
a corresponding
specific type of happiness.
For example,
people witha strong sense of
curiosity
have significantly higher
levels of engagement,
where they lose track of time,
and people who are full of
kindness
are more likely to be blessed with
rich relationships.
In this way,
each strength
shares the burden of supporting
different aspects of happiness.
And,
among these 24
strengths,
there is one that is deeply connected
to all five elements of happiness
without exception,
and it has been clearly proven that
people of this type
will have overwhelmingly higher
future happiness,
making it the
only strength found to do so.
That is,
a heart of
gratitude.
People who never forget to be grateful
in their daily lives
see their excitement, engagement,
bonds with others, and
sense of purpose—
the needles for all five elements
jump to the right
in unison,
as the data has shown.
If other strengths
bring only specific types of happiness
with pinpoint accuracy,
"Gratitude"
has
the special power to
sensitively catch
all kinds of happiness,
strengthening
the very antenna of the heart
from the inside
all at once.
Thank you for
learning with me
until the very end
of this 10-part course.
I sincerely hope that
your own
"gratitude"
antenna
will illuminate your daily life from here on out
more vividly.
