7 Days, 6 Nights in Tohoku on a Budget Under 50,000 Yen Part 2 ~Hayachine~
Hello. This is my mountain travel diary.
For Golden Week 2025, I took a trip around the 100 Famous Mountains of Tohoku, focusing on Mt. Hayachine in Iwate. I would like to write about that experience.
Today, I will start by writing about the record of the third day. You can find the reports for the first and second days here.
Day 3 ~April 27, 2025~
On the third day, I woke up from a nap at the Roadside Station Hayachine. When the sun started to rise, it was foggy all over... I didn't want the weather to be bad despite it being Mt. Hayachine, so I went back to sleep.
When I woke up from my second sleep, I could see blue skies! I hurried to the trailhead.
I think the most popular course for climbing Mt. Hayachine is a round trip from Odagoe, but during Golden Week, the prefectural road to Odagoe is closed for winter.
Therefore, this time I will walk the route aiming for Mt. Hayachine via Mt. Keito from the Take trailhead!

I finished my preparations just after 7:00 AM and started walking.
Japan's 100 Famous Mountains: Mt. Hayachine (1,917m, Iwate Prefecture)
Mt. Hayachine (Hayachine-san) is a mountain in Iwate Prefecture with an elevation of 1,917m. The elevation of the first-order triangulation point is 1,913.61m. It is the highest peak in the Kitakami Mountains and is selected as one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains[2], New 100 Famous Mountains of Japan[3], 100 Famous Mountains for Flowers[4], New 100 Famous Mountains for Flowers[5], and 100 Famous Mountains with First-Order Triangulation Points[6]. Together with Mt. Rokkoushi and Mt. Ishigami, it is called the "Tono Three Mountains" [7]. The summit is the boundary of three cities: Miyako City, Tono City, and Hanamaki City. It has long been called
Hayachine, and it is included in Japan's 100 Famous Mountains under that name.
I will look back on this mountain trip mainly through photos as well.
There was no snow at all at the trailhead, but there was significant snow accumulation near the emergency hut on the way to Mt. Keito. I put on my chain spikes and climbed steadily.

Arrived at Mt. Keito. I'm in a great mood because the weather is completely nice. That said, Mt. Hayachine, my goal, is still far away. I'll brace myself and start walking again.

As I got closer to Mt. Hayachine, the trees became shorter, and before I knew it, they were creeping pines. And before I realized it, I had passed the timberline and the terrain had turned into a rocky ridge.

About 6 hours from the start of the climb. I arrived at the summit just before 1:00 PM. This is my 54th 100 Famous Mountain, Mt. Hayachine, successfully summited.
The wind picked up suddenly near the summit. I headed down toward Odagoe from here, but the wind strength until I reached the forest was the strongest I have ever experienced.
In the strong winds that threatened to knock me off balance if I let my guard down, I descended while occasionally crouching down to wait for the wind to die down.

After walking for about an hour and a half from the summit, I arrived safely at Odagoe. A sigh of relief.
From here, I walked along the prefectural road the whole way. Since it was during the winter road closure period, there was plenty of snow on the road.

And I arrived at the Gaku trailhead parking lot just after 4:00 PM. It was a long 9-hour trek, but I made it back without any injuries!
Please check the YAMAP page for detailed information about the mountain trip.
After descending, I set my sights on the North Kanto and Joshin'etsu regions and began heading south.
For now, I had dinner at Sukiya again (1,010 yen) and stopped by Towa Onsen to wash off the sweat. The bathing fee was 700 yen.
It was a nice hot spring with an open-air bath. I was able to soak for a long time and give my body a good rest.
After that, I refueled at a gas station just in case (4,188 yen) and moved on to Roadside Station Hiraizumi.
I took a nap here until the next morning.
Day 3 Expenses
・Food and drink (Day 3 dinner) 1,010 yen
・Hot spring 700 yen
・Gasoline 4,188 yen
Total: 5,898 yen
Conclusion
That is all from my mountain trip diary.
I have also recorded the continuation. Part 3 is here.
