The reason why I enrolled my child with a severe disability in a special needs school
No. 268 The story introduced this time
The story introduced this time is a post from a parent reflecting on their decision regarding the path after graduation for their child, who had a classmate in kindergarten with a severe disability.
Regarding the posting date, I was able to confirm the post on
a summary site as June 8, 2015, but please forgive me if that is incorrect.
There was a YouTube video based on this story, so I will introduce that as well.
Post content
There was a child with a severe disability in the same kindergarten class.
After graduating from kindergarten, the parents were torn between sending the child to a regular school or a special needs school.
The other parents at the kindergarten (my parents included) were all close, so we tried to persuade them to go to a regular school together.
We said there was nothing to worry about because the children would look after them, and that we would all support them, so they should apply to the regular school.
However, the parents chose to send the child to a special needs school.
They felt that since even the parents were struggling, the surrounding children would definitely be inconvenienced, and they did not want to sacrifice them.
They felt reassured because there were specialized facilities and professional staff.
They believed it would be a positive thing for the future if the child realized the harsh reality that they were not 'normal' at an early stage and made friends who shared the same circumstances.
They were concerned that as the child entered a sensitive age, if they faced the reality of being the only one different from others, they might build walls around their heart or potentially be bullied.
They thought that by making 'lifelong best friends' who shared the same circumstances during this sensitive period, it would be easier for the child to build resilience against discrimination and prejudice, and that it would become a source of strength to overcome challenges.
They also wanted to learn by sharing information with other parents in the same situation.
For these clear reasons, they went from house to house to express their gratitude while explaining their decision to enroll the child in a special needs school.
The above is what I heard from my parents after I became an adult.
By the way, the couple are apparently graduates of Kyoto University and Kyushu University.
