Tumulus Syndrome, Weekly Short-Short Note, 503 characters
I have a condition I call Tumulus Syndrome.
When I get close to a tumulus, I hear a voice.
"Don't come."
When I told my mother about it, she put on a strangely serious face and said this:
"Your father had it too. It's because of your ancestors..."
Since then, I've come up with my own interpretation. Surely, our family must be descended from ancient royalty or powerful clans. My ancestors sleeping in the tumuli are telling me it's not my time yet, to live, to do my best. It's the love of my ancestral spirits.
Then, I participated in a university history event. During a walking tour of the local tumulus cluster, an archaeology professor was guiding us.
"In this region, during the late Kofun period..."
That was when it happened.
"Don't come."
I couldn't help but smile bitterly. Long time no see, ancestor. I get it. I'm not going over there yet.
Then the professor looked at me.
"You look pale, are you alright?"
"No, actually, ever since I was young, I've heard voices when I get close to tumuli. They say, 'Don't come.'"
The professor let out a small "Ah" and then said,
"It was written in an ancient document. I had assumed it was just superstition."
"So, it really is... royalty..."
"Yes. It says that such sorcery was cast on grave robbers of the tumuli."
"Grave robbers?"
"Yes, tomb raiding. Surely your ancestors were..."
At that moment, the voice spoke again.
"Don't come. Don't steal."
