Reading Surgery, Weekly Short-Short Note, 410 characters
I possess a unique ability.
When I am reading a book, if I use a scalpel on the lines in my imagination, the thoughts the author left unsaid spill out from the incision.
The emotions the characters hid behind their silence.
The metaphors that were not chosen.
The episodes that were cut.
Everything that could not fit on the page oozes out like blood and spreads before my eyes.
When I first experienced this, the world changed completely.
I trembled with joy, operating on every book I could get my hands on, touching the depths of the authors' thoughts.
However, at one point, I suddenly realized something.
The element of surprise had vanished from my reading.
Once I make an incision, the mysteries between the lines and the silence of the margins are all exposed.
I had stolen the joy of imagination and my freedom as a reader with my own hands.
The moment I realized this, I put down the scalpel.
No, in my heart, I sealed that power away.
I will never cut them open again.
Even if it is painful, even if I do not understand, I will read while leaving the silence between the lines.
When I opened the page, for the first time in a long while, my heart stirred.
That was proof that I had returned to being a 'reader' myself.
