Part 3 [Series: Surfing, Sometimes, Farming.]
Even without waves, a "harvest wave" seems to be coming!
(May 2024)
Hello! I'm a sea-loving person in my late 40s.
The number of hot days has been increasing lately, and it's truly early summer weather.
Unfortunately, the beach I call home has had a string of flat days during this time, and the waves just won't pick up.
So, on my days off lately, I've been putting away my surfboard and spending my time exclusively at the farm.
As if to comfort me, the vegetables are showing explosive growth right now!

Eggplant, cucumbers, shishito peppers, bell peppers, and tomatoes.
Even pumpkins and zucchini have started to grow cute little fruits on their branches.
At this rate, I should be able to start my "harvest festival" by mid-June.

Well, this time, I got a head start and harvested some "okahijiki" (saltwort) that had been growing rapidly!
This okahijiki is a vegetable that grows wild on sandy coastal areas, and it's named for its resemblance to the seaweed hijiki.
As a sea lover, I can't help but feel a sense of sympathy for the name (lol).

The task of snipping off the soft new shoots with scissors is an indescribable pleasure!
I brought them home right away and stir-fried them quickly with sesame oil and chikuwa!
The
crunchy texturethat pops in your mouth was truly shocking!"Is this the taste of something I grew myself..." I felt a wave of emotion similar to catching a set while waiting for waves.

There are no waves, but a wonderful "harvest wave" is crashing onto the farm.
I have a feeling I'll be able to bring you a report on the full-scale summer vegetable harvest next time.
Look forward to it!
