What I Accomplished in a Year

It's been a while since my last post.

Around this time last year, I decided to make use of my parents' vegetable garden.
A year has passed since then, and I've done my best to make it as lovely a garden as possible within my budget,
so I'd like to share the results with you!

Around this time last year. The garden was overgrown with weeds.

In the spring of 2026, I finally got off my butt and
made a firm resolution to create the garden of my dreams, filled with flowers and greenery!
I made a plan.
First, I decided to build a path to clearly separate the flower beds from the walkway.

I laid down weed-control fabric, then spread road base material on top and compacted it.
On top of that, I laid down decorative gravel and bricks.

For the border between the path and the flower beds, I used reasonably priced plastic 'Papa-tto Tsuchidome-kun' edging. To keep the gravel from sinking, I used a solid 40 bags of road base material! I bought these at the home center and hauled them in my light car, 10 bags at a time.
This was the hardest part.

After that, I spread gravel on top, but since that's a bit pricey,
I added bricks in the gaps for accents, and eventually laid down wood chips as well. Wood chips are light and actually look quite nice.
Maybe I should have just used them for everything...

The path is finished! The color differences are just part of the charm (lol).
My parents' cat, Mike-chan. She keeps me company on my walks.

This is how it looks now!

The creeping thyme I planted as ground cover is growing too vigorously (lol).
I'm transplanting it to various places.

I planted Tapien around the path to help with weed control. I hope it spreads quickly and grows stronger than the weeds.

Silene, one of my favorite flowers.
This is a smoke tree. I've also planted some trees that will grow a bit larger to provide shade.

I also planted a few vegetables.

The tomatoes my daughter tasted at the store and decided on immediately. They are super sweet!
Eggplant and green beans. These were requested by my husband.
On the other side, there are potatoes. I've also sown seeds for edamame and 'Oomasari' peanuts.

It's starting to look pretty good.
My family is supporting me, and it's the fruit of everyone's hard work.
From now on, it's a battle against the heat and the weeds!

I'm debating whether to buy a rechargeable tiller this year.
If anyone has one, please let me know your recommendations.

Well then, thank you for reading until the end.
