Book Review Note [Do We Not Need Words?]
"Do We Not Need Words?" I read this book.
Are words a
medium = intermediary
that connects me to the world? Or are they a
barrier = obstacle that separates the two? --
I would like to write my thoughts while quoting the parts that caught my attention.
The functions that words possess
Words have many important functions other than expressing something. Therefore, saying that 'words are nothing more than shadows or imitations that can only inaccurately represent the real thing, and thus can only be a barrier to communication' is a rough and illogical argument.
Words are likely insufficient for accurately expressing real things.
However, words have 'other important functions.'
In the first place, the question 'What is communication?' also comes to mind.
According to an AI summary, 'communication is the act of people conveying their thoughts and feelings to each other, that is, mutual understanding.'
I also think that 'thoughts' and 'feelings' themselves cannot be called 'accurate (certain) things.'
Confirming the meaning of words
For those who have long held power and authority and take it for granted without doubt, such as men who are well-accustomed to the customs of a patriarchal male society, or the wealthy who are completely used to the life of the upper class, the problems and suffering faced by those who do not have it are hard to see, and their content and seriousness are difficult to understand. And, without knowing it, they tend to interpret the meaning of words as they like and force them onto the other party. Also, the other party finds it difficult as a practical matter to object to existing customs or current relationships, and tends to conform whether they like it or not.
It can happen to anyone to interpret the meaning of the other person's words selfishly.
And it is difficult to tell someone in power, 'That is not what I meant.'
I think it is important to confirm the meaning of words in communication while being aware of such things.
Utterance is lighting
Our utterances play a role as lighting, so to speak, that shines light on things from a specific angle and highlights the specific appearance (= characteristics, aspects, expressions) that emerges there.
I think it is very interesting to try to be aware of 'from what angle am I trying to shine light now' while speaking.
This is because it means being aware of 'what part of the other person I want to know,' and it can also be a trigger to know 'what kind of things I am interested in.'
The act of thinking
This is because searching for and choosing words to express what elements of this movie moved me, and where and how it was 'amazing' occupies an important part of the act of thinking about things. (p115)
Amazing, interesting, wonderful.
Summarizing your impressions with such words is also losing one trigger for 'thinking.'
It might be suffocating to keep thinking about everything, but when I feel something, I want to try to find words that fit well.
