Cannot Paint Blue

　A girl loved to draw and painted the scenery of the riverbank every day.

　One day, a boy in the same grade who happened to be passing by spoke to her.
“That’s a lovely painting. The blue of this sky is very soothing.”
“Thank you.”

　From then on, the boy came to see the girl every day.
　The two became friends and talked about many things.
　About school, about friends, about family.

　However, the boy moved far away due to his family’s circumstances.
　The girl was so sad that she could no longer paint the blue sky the boy had loved, and she stopped drawing.

　While sorting through the belongings of my late grandmother, I found an old sketchbook. Among many watercolors, there was one painting where the color of the sky had not been filled in.

　I remembered the story I had heard from my grandmother. It was her final painting.

　I recalled my grandmother’s story and felt a pang of sadness. It seems that was the last she ever saw of that boy.

　I put the painting in a frame and displayed it in my room.
　The sunset streaming in through the window dyed the blank sky of the painting red.
