Night and Proverbs
( #Short-short Body: 530 characters)
"You know the saying, 'If you go fishing at night, you won't be there when your parents die,' right?"
What on earth is this guy suddenly saying? It's true that if you get a call about someone being in critical condition, you can't get home in a hurry if you're in the middle of a night fishing trip.
But that's not actually it. Correcting mistakes is a colleague's duty.
"That's wrong. 'If you cut your nails at night, you'll cut them too short' is the correct one."
It means if you're going to cut your nails, do it while it's still light out. I've had times where I cut them after dark, couldn't see well, cut too much, and it hurt. See? It's backed by experience, isn't it?
"I see. I thought 'If you look at the moon at night, it's not as bright as you'd think' was the common one."
He countered me. It's true that it's not as bright compared to looking at the sun during the day.
But that's a bit different.
"If you're going to say that, it's 'If you commit a crime at night, you won't be forgiven until morning.'"
I know this for a fact because I'm the one who played pranks at night and was locked in the closet until morning. I was put in there just the other day. My mom doesn't show mercy even though I'm an adult.
This kind of argument continued endlessly. Finally, he came up with a decent suggestion.
"Well, how about we compromise and say, 'If you cut your nails at night, you won't be there when your parents die.'"
I've used my brain too much and I'm tired. Somehow, I've stopped caring. I don't really get it, but let's go with that.
And so, the proverb dictionary was created.
