Death Poem / #ShirokumaLiteratureClub
Foggy morning
A brief break in the clouds
Rain at night
The foggy lake where people who throw themselves in never cease. A missing person report was filed with the police from a long-established inn near the lake. A note written as above was left in the room.
"The female guest who came to stay last night is nowhere to be seen this morning. I told her to always let us know when she goes out, but it seems she left early in the morning without saying a word. I'm so worried that she might have committed suicide..."
The missing person report was filed at 10:00 AM. The search began with unusual speed, but the police judged that the situation was urgent as there had been several suicides by jumping into the lake in the past few months.
"Inspector. Is this note a suicide note? It could also be read as a death poem."
"Perhaps. Tired of a life with no future in sight, even if a glimmer of hope appears, the next moment is darkness, and it just keeps raining. It could be read that way too."
"...If so, there is a high possibility that she committed suicide because she felt there was no point in living anymore."
"Whether she has already thrown herself into the lake or is still hesitating somewhere, hurry and search the area thoroughly."
Deep fog still hung around the pond, and the search did not progress easily. Police officers, firefighters, village office staff, and people working at the inn devoted many personnel to searching for the missing woman, wondering if she had sunk into the lake or was wandering around intending to throw herself in. Although the fog cleared a little by noon, no good reports were obtained.
However, in the evening, the woman who had been reported missing suddenly appeared near the lake. The search party breathed a sigh of relief.
"I'm glad you're safe. What have you been doing until now?"
"I heard the weather would turn bad today, so I went climbing the mountain on the other side of the lake as soon as the day broke. I'm glad I was able to return before it started raining."
"There was a note in your room; wasn't that a death poem?"
"A note? A death poem?"
"Yes.
Foggy morning
A brief break in the clouds
Rain at night
is the note."
"Oh, that is a note of today's weather forecast.
Fog will appear from the morning.
It will clear up a little by noon,
but it will start raining at night.
So, I thought I would leave early in the morning and return in the evening."
