Living with the Dry Wind
The eland, a large animal living in Africa, is known for its gentle nature, which contrasts with its imposing appearance, and it appears in vast grasslands with a slow, steady gait. It is not uncommon for individuals to weigh over 500 kilograms, and it is said to be one of the largest among the horned antelope family. Their habitat is primarily savannas and arid grassland regions, and they are widely distributed from Southern Africa to East Africa, with slight differences in body color and physique depending on the region. To survive in arid lands, they have a flexible diet that includes not only grass but also leaves and fruits, and they move according to the season in search of food.
An interesting characteristic of the eland is its high jumping ability, which belies its large size. Even adults can easily jump over heights of more than one meter, which is surprising given their weight. Also, they sometimes walk while making a unique clicking sound from their throat area, and it is said that this sound is useful for members of the herd to keep track of each other's positions. Herds vary in size from a few to several dozen, and they may form larger herds during the dry season. Although they are cautious, they sometimes mingle with other herbivores and can be seen moving alongside zebras and impalas.

Both males and females have horns, but the male's horns are thick and strongly twisted, and they exhibit behavior such as pushing against each other with their horns during territorial disputes. However, these rarely turn into fierce battles and often end with them just testing each other's strength. Some individuals have white stripes on their sides, which can make their bodies appear to blend into the grassland depending on the lighting. This is thought to be a camouflage effect to protect themselves from predators.
Because elands are adapted to arid environments, they can survive for long periods even when water is scarce. They have a mechanism to efficiently retain moisture in their bodies, and they can also supplement the necessary water by eating plants that contain morning dew. Furthermore, they have a lifestyle rhythm adapted to the African climate, often resting quietly in the shade during the hottest hours and becoming active from the evening when the temperature drops until night. Calves have a strong bond with their mothers and grow up while always staying close to them within the herd.
They have a long history of interaction with humans, and in some regions, they are even raised like livestock. Eland milk has a high fat content and has been used since ancient times. Also, because they have the habit of living while moving across vast lands, it is said that they can spend their time relatively calmly even in fenced areas. In the wild, they are sometimes targeted by predators such as lions and hyenas, but because they move in herds, it is easy for them to detect danger, and due to their large size, it is not common for adults to be attacked.
The eland walking through the African grasslands is a creature that possesses both strength and tranquility. Despite their large bodies, they jump lightly and live resiliently in dry lands, giving them a unique charm among other herbivores. They show slightly different appearances in each region across their wide habitat, and I feel that they are a profound animal the more you observe them. Their slow gait as they move through the grasslands seems to symbolize the richness of African nature, and including their interactions with other animals living there, they are a subject of endless interest the more you learn about them.
