Koga City, located almost in the center of the Kanto Plain, is a castle town of Koga Castle in western Ibaraki Prefecture that flourished as a post town on the Hitachi Kaido road. One winter, Koga City was struck by an abnormal cold wave and heavy snowfall. As people wondered why there was such heavy snow in Koga, Ibaraki, which is not a snowy region, a giant monster suddenly appeared from within the blizzard, rampaging through the city while blowing out a fierce snowstorm. This monster was the cause of the abnormal cold wave. Dr. Nakashima, who researches the history of Koga City at the Koga History Museum at the Koga Castle ruins, noticed that the geometric patterns appearing in the monster's compound eyes changed according to its emotions, and that they closely resembled the 'snow crystal patterns' found throughout Koga City. He wondered if there might be a hint in the 'Sekka Zusetsu' (Illustrated Book of Snow Crystals) left behind by Doi Toshitsura, the lord of the Koga Domain, who was known as the 'Snow Lord.' Lord Toshitsura, who was the first in Japan to observe snow crystals, called them 'Sekka' (snow flowers) and compiled sketches of them into the 'Sekka Zusetsu.' The snow crystal patterns recorded there were left behind by Lord Toshitsura, who foresaw that the future would be struck by climate change, as a communication tool to attempt to interact with a monster that would bring a great cold wave. People used the lanterns and long bamboo poles used in the Chochin Zao Momi Festival to wave lanterns painted with snow crystal patterns at the monster, successfully communicating with it. The monster Sekkamons now contributes to the region by balancing temperatures and helping with the production of ice cream and frozen foods.
