Kindness was a choice.
I realized it once again.
I am truly living my life supported by kind people.
Today, in particular, was a day where I was helped by kind women.
I am truly grateful.
In the first place, it was I who caused the trouble,
yet none of them showed even a hint of annoyance.
One woman smiled and said,
"These things happen."
Furthermore, she laughed and added,
"I'm actually glad I had business nearby anyway," and after that, she even shared some fun stories with me.
……What a big heart she has.
Soft like a violet, yet with a core of strength.
She was someone who chose to offer reassurance rather than blame.
And the same was true for my talk lesson student.
Seeing the situation, she very naturally asked,
"Shall I do such-and-such for you?"
That one sentence seemed to carry not just the meaning of "I'll help you,"
but also the kindness of saying, "It's okay, you don't have to carry this alone."
I was completely impressed.
People each live in different environments, in different situations, with different souls.
That is why every day, we make many choices.
What to say.
What not to say.
What expression to wear when meeting people.
The clothes to wear today.
What to eat.
The TV channel.
The strength of the cafe au lait.
And, what words to offer to others.
What attitude to take when interacting with them.
The accumulation of those things changes one minute from now,
changes one hour from now,
changes three years from now,
and before you know it, it becomes "now."
Of course, there are days when that doesn't go well.
There are plenty of those.
The women I met today could have blamed me.
They could have sighed.
They could have refused because they were busy.
But what everyone chose was a smile.
It was compassion.
It was words that made the other person feel at ease.
I believe that the accumulation of those choices is what makes those people so kind.
In psychology, it is said that a person's personality and habits are shaped not by "what they think," but by "what they repeatedly choose."
Kindness must be the same.
The accumulation of small daily choices.
Today, I was helped many times by such kindness.
Living in the "eternal now" might mean carefully stacking up each and every choice right in front of you.
I want to make sure the kindness I received today doesn't just end with me thinking, "I'm so grateful."
I want to keep making choices so that, in turn, I can pass that kindness on to someone else.
That is what I thought about today.
Thank you for joining me.
