Q: What are the things that seem to be polar opposites, such as good and evil, actually?
A: Good and evil are not polar opposites; they are substitutes and merely a gradient on a common scale of choice. Like temperature, it is a matter of degree. There is no such thing as "cold" versus "hot"—it is not a polarity, but a gradient. Depending on the degree to which a human feels comfortable, an adjective is attached to a point on the thermometer, but that is arbitrary and depends on the required conditions. For example, 55 degrees Fahrenheit (12.777...°C) is cool and even cold, but as a refrigerator setting, it is too warm to safely preserve food.
Evil is not the opposite of "love," but the absence of "love."The "scale of consciousness" represents the degree of the presence of "love."
Analyzing the characteristics of consciousness reveals that salvation occurs when consciousness returns to a |non-dual primordial state (remembering its connection to the Source). It is accomplished solely through the "obedience" of surrendering the duality of the |ego's selfishness and intentions to the |non-dual "Truth of God" (remembering its connection to the Source). The return from the duality of the |ego to the non-duality of the |Spirit is so difficult and rare that it is possible only through the "Grace of Divinity." Therefore, humans need a guiding, inspiring, and supporting Savior to rescue them from the suffering of the |ego.
The "tempter" is human curiosity, and this curiosity is a fundamental weakness. When combined with the |innate (natural) defect of ignorance (the inability to distinguish truth from falsehood), one falls into the traps of low consciousness levels. When curiosity leads the innocent human consciousness into the world of duality, that person becomes trapped and entangled in it, like someone addicted to a soap opera. Once captivated by the illusions of a melodrama, the |ego becomes one with the drama, and the awareness of the |"Self" (the true self) is lost in the movie that fascinates the |self (ego). Then, attachments to all fictions, identities, and objects of fascination arise.
Only a few people want to escape from such a quagmire. Even fewer realize that they are in such a predicament. And even fewer still find the way to escape the traps of the |ego. The world of the |ego is like a hall of mirrors; chasing the ever-changing images in the mirrors, the |ego wanders, gets lost, and becomes confused. Life can be compared to a constant trial and error to escape from a maze. And at times, for many—perhaps for most—the world of mirrors becomes a house of horrors, becoming increasingly terrifying. The only way to escape from this long, winding wandering is to seek spiritual truth.
