English phrases popping out of your mouth! Tips for learning English realized through Korean variety shows
“I’m studying English, but it just won’t come out of my mouth…”
Don’t you feel that way sometimes?
Actually, recently, by getting hooked on Korean variety shows,
I realized something important that also applies to learning English.
Introduction
In this article, I will share:
🔸 Why phrases come out naturally by continuing to listen
🔸 Learning methods applicable to English that I noticed from Korean
🔸 Current adjustments
I will tell you about these.
🔹 Things I noticed while watching Korean variety shows
A while ago, I became obsessed with a Korean YouTube variety show,
and I was watching those videos almost every day.
Then, at one point, during a casual moment,
Korean lines started popping into my head.
For example,
“Kiyo! (귀여워 = cute)”
“Ippeuda! (예쁘다 = pretty)”
“Neomu joa (너무 좋아 = I love it so much)”
and so on.
Before I knew it,I felt like I was having a conversation in Korean inside my head.
In variety shows, words like reactions
are repeated over and over, aren't they?
Since I was watching with Japanese subtitles,
I felt that the words and their meanings naturally connected.
🔹 Phrases that came out during my trip
Actually, I had a similar experience when I traveled to Korea the year before last.
When I was shopping at a store, I naturally said,
“Igo juseyo (이거 주세요 = please give me this)”
Even though I hadn't prepared at all,
I still remember being very surprised, thinking,“Huh? I'm speaking Korean!
”
I was watching Korean variety shows often back then too,
so I think those words just came out naturally.
🔹 How can this be applied to learning English?
When speaking English,
I believe it is important to practice while imagining the situation.
I have done this myself in the past, but this experience made me realize its importance all over again.
This experience made me realize its importance all over again.
Videos are easy to remember because the words come out along with the situation, aren't they?
Moreover, by hearing the same phrases over and over,
I felt them naturally soaking into my mind.
English is the same; I feel that it is very important to
practice while imagining the situation
rather than just memorizing phrases from a textbook.
・Pretending to order at a cafe with "Can I have a coffee?"
・Feeling like someone asked for directions with "Go straight and turn left."
・Really feeling like I'm hungry with "I’m hungry."
In this way, if you say it out loud while imagining the scene,
I think it will become easier for it to come out of your mouth more naturally.
🔹What I learned and my current approach
On the other hand, only Korean kept popping into my head,
and I even thought, "At this rate, I might forget my English..."
But fortunately, my obsession with Korean variety shows didn't last that long,
and now I have returned to English videos.
Triggered by this experience, I have come to think,
"I will try to avoid videos with Japanese explanations as much as possible and try to feel English as English."
I am still studying myself, so I am still going through trial and error, but
I hope that English will start to come out more naturally.
🟨 Summary
Through my experiences with Korean variety shows and traveling, I have once again realized the power of
continuing to listen.
And I feel that because you learn it along with the situation, phrases come out naturally.
For beginners, native videos might feel
tough at first because you don't understand the meaning
.
But I think it is enough to just watch talk shows featuring people you like, or content you can get absorbed in and enjoy, with Japanese subtitles at first.
While watching and enjoying them, English-specific reactions and responses will naturally remain in your ears.
I have also gotten used to it little by little that way.
I hope you will also find your "favorite video" and incorporate it into your daily routine.
