Confessions of a 'Shameful Eater' Part 5
Hello. I am a guy charging through his sixties.
In this column, I write exclusively about food.
However, this is not about stylish restaurants or gourmet food information.
I am boldly exposing my own personal foods and ways of eating that are a bit embarrassing to tell others about, but which I am addicted to.
'Are you okay with that?' 'Is your sense of taste broken?' 'Ugh, that's gross.'
No matter what people say, I believe there is someone out there who shares the same habit, so I will continue to confess today.
🍘🍨 Harmony of Brown and White
One food that makes me glad to have been born Japanese is soy sauce senbei (rice crackers).
There are countless companies making senbei, but almost all of them are delicious.
And what further enhances the flavor of those soy sauce senbei is milk.
I believe the combination of cold milk and soy sauce senbei surpasses hot tea and senbei.
I take a bite of a soy sauce senbei, chew it twice, and then wash it down with cold milk.
Then, oh my, the milk tastes sweeter and the senbei tastes even more savory, and the cycle of senbei, milk, senbei, milk... continues endlessly.

Vanilla ice cream also goes very well as a partner for soy sauce senbei.
Put a teaspoon of vanilla ice cream on top of a senbei and take a bite.
Truly, an exquisite harmony of brown and white.
Pure white vanilla ice cream nestling shyly on top of a shiny, glistening brown senbei...
When you take a bite, the sweet and salty gentleness and the coldness spread in your mouth.
As with milk, this is likely because it has a subtle flavor that doesn't interfere with the taste of the senbei.
Also, 'kamesen' (turtle-shaped crackers) are good too.
The crackers have a slight sweetness, giving them a different taste from soy sauce senbei.

I once gathered the courage to try and teach my wife about the charm of the harmony of brown and white, but
I received a clear answer: 'Oh, I'm fine.'
I think vanilla is the best match for soy sauce senbei, but next time I will try opening the forbidden door with matcha ice cream.
