Atwood's short story collection "Burning Burning". Mean, dark, sometimes funny, sometimes scary—well, it's a truly fascinating book.

It's a book with a very unsettling title, but
it's truly fascinating.
Well,
I wonder if I should call it fascinating,
it's that kind of dark collection of works.

The flames on this cover.
It reminds me of the costume of the pro wrestler
Bam Bam Bigelow😆

　As for the content,
it's like this.

Since there are many patterns where
the story begins without any explanation,
at first,
it can feel a bit hard to get into.

But,
once you get used to it,
it becomes quite addictive, doesn't it?🎶

"Alphinland",
"The Resurrected", and
"Dark Lady" are a series of linked stories where the characters, who are writers and people around them,
overlap little by little.

Even the foul-mouthed language
starts to feel comfortable, doesn't it...??
Mean and cynical, it's great.

"Freeze-Dried Groom" is also good.
Wouldn't it be nice if it were made into a movie?

"I Dreamed of Zinnia with the Scarlet Fangs"
is a sisterhood story, right?
It was a refreshing read.

"The Dead Hand Loves You"
had an interesting structure too.

"Stone Mattress" is
a kind of
"Promising Young Woman"??

And, the title story
"Burning Burning".

Atwood is said to depict
future society
like a prophet.

I hope
nothing like this happens.
There is humor, but
this is

a dystopian novel, isn't it.

In Japan too,
a while ago,
a man with triangle and circle
oden glasses
"The elderly should commit suicide."
was saying something like that.

I would like to tell him, "You will also get old eventually, you know."

I don't think I've seen him lately,
did he disappear?
If so,
that is a very good thing.

With the exception of a few stories,
the protagonists are elderly.
Somehow,
there are many expressions that hit close to home💦
