My Mother-in-Law's Little English Challenge: A Sequel to Our Restaurant Memory

This is a sequel to the post I made the other day, "A Memory of My Mother-in-Law at a Restaurant."

After I taught my mother-in-law how to order still mineral water, she said, "I want to speak it too, so write it down for me!" so I typed the sentence on my smartphone and sent it to her.

And yesterday, the chance to actually use it at that restaurant finally arrived.

As my mother-in-law was conveying her order to the server while looking at her phone screen, the server also peeked at the screen, seemed to understand everything, and walked away from the table with a smile, saying, "Thank you for your order."

Her English was still a bit shaky, but I think the server would have understood even without looking at the screen, so I was really happy.

While we were waiting for the mineral water, my mother-in-law said with a beaming smile, "I'm so happy that I was able to make myself understood in English. Thank you, Hikaru!" and I was so happy that I almost teared up myself. 😿

It was a joy just like when I was a child and was able to speak English with friends without anyone's help.

Perhaps language is something where having a single phrase understood like this creates the feeling of, "I want to learn and use something else next time."

It was a heartwarming episode.
