I visited Fuki-ji Temple.

I recommend it, but it might be difficult if you go during crowded hours. Also, it is quite far away.
The drive is tiring.
Fuki-ji Temple, located in Bungotakada City, Oita Prefecture, is a historic temple founded in the Heian period, and its main hall, the 'Fuki-ji Odo,' is designated as a National Treasure, known as the oldest wooden structure in Kyushu.
I will explain its charm and highlights in detail.
1. National Treasure 'Fuki-ji Odo'
The Odo, which is the symbol of Fuki-ji, was built in the late Heian period.
One of the Three Great Amida Halls of Japan: Along with the 'Chuson-ji Konjikido' in Iwate Prefecture and the 'Byodo-in Ho-odo' in Kyoto Prefecture, it is counted as one of the Three Great Amida Halls of Japan.
Oldest wooden structure in Kyushu: It is the oldest existing wooden structure in Kyushu and a very valuable building.
Made of Japanese nutmeg (kaya) wood: Kaya wood is used so lavishly that there is a legend that the entire building was constructed from a single large kaya tree.
2. Treasures inside (murals and Buddhist statues)
The interior of the Odo expresses the world of the Pure Land as it was imagined at the time.
Seated Statue of Amida Nyorai: The Amida Nyorai statue enshrined as the principal image is a National Important Cultural Property. It is characterized by its gentle expression.
Polychrome murals: The walls were decorated with vivid murals depicting the Pure Land. Although they are quite weathered now, some of the original colors remain, allowing you to feel the aesthetic sense of the Heian period.
3. Rokugo Manzan Culture
Fuki-ji is one of the 'Rokugo Manzan' temples, a unique Buddhist culture of the Kunisaki Peninsula.
This region is said to be the birthplace of 'Shinbutsu-shugo' (syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism), and unique stone Buddhas and temples are scattered throughout the area. Fuki-ji is known as one of the most prestigious temples among them.
4. Beauty of the four seasons (especially autumn leaves)
Fuki-ji is located in a place rich in nature and shows different expressions depending on the season.
Autumn (late November to early December): This is the most popular season. The large **ginkgo tree** on the temple grounds sheds its leaves, and the ground looks like it has been covered with a yellow carpet. Also, the contrast between the surrounding autumn leaves and the old hall is a superb view.
Winter: When it snows, the hall standing in the silence takes on an even more fantastic atmosphere.

Trivia
It is said that Fuki-ji Temple was established as the family temple of the Chief Priest (the head of the Shinto priests) of Usa Jingu Shrine, and it has a deep connection with Usa Jingu.
It is a wonderful place where you can feel the breath of the Heian period in a calm atmosphere. I highly recommend it, especially to those who love history, architecture, and photography.
